How should the start rankings next year be determined?

Postby Togtdyalttai » 23 Nov 2008, 22:40

I've brought this up to all the moderators, and now I think it's time to give everyone else a chance to voice their opinions. My idea is this:

1. Throw out the 06 rankings. They don't correspond other than very loosely to 09 skills.

2. Hold 4 practice tournaments during the month of December. There should be no seeding for these tournaments, and 1 each should be held on clay, grass, blue green cement, and carpet.

3. Use the combined results of the practice tournaments to form the beginning rankings for the 09 season. Each practice tournament should hold equal weight in the rankings.

This is my latest idea, but I also had another one earlier:

Hold one huge practice tournament, with round robin to start it. There would be groups of 4 and each player in a group would play each other player twice, once on each player's choice of surface. Then the top 2 players from each group would advance to the elimination round. In the elimination round, each matchup would consist of two matches, one on each player's choice of surface. The aggregate set count would determine who wins, and if that is equal, then the aggregate game count. If this format sounds familiar, it's because I pretty much stole it from the UEFA cup. :P

I know there are probably other ideas for rankings also, and I'm not convince mine's the best. If you have an idea, please post it here.

because he knows that he is a huge cheater and know how to trick ppls look his rank (15) and he is maybe the most active player maybe on top 50 on TE 2009 so he knows that he'll get more chances to be on top 3, so he is like doing something to favor himself, Look at my rank (2) I'm really close to be the #1 and this guy want to destroy our passion, to enjoy the ranks.
Really this guy has poor ideas

i think we could have those practice tournaments but obviously they shouldn't count for the ranking
also, if something has to change is the points won by round cuz it'll change at real tennis next season, i don't know what happens with the points won this year though...
so, keep this year ranking but make the changes that are being made with the real tennis, if that means change anything with our ranking, it has to be done
it'll be like this
Grand Slam: 2000 pts (winner), 1200 (runner up), 720 (semi final) 360 (quarter final)
Masters 1000(replace Masters Series): 1000 puntos (winner) 600 (runner up), 360 (semi final) 180 (quarter final)
ATP 500(Replace ATP 250): 500 puntos (winner), 300 (runner up) 180 (semi final) 90 (quarter final)
ATP 250(Replace ATP 175): 250 (winner), 150 (runner up), 90 (Semi final), 45 (quarter final)
if i know anything more i'll post it

Well TTennisfan you were the one who reset the rankings and nullified all previous results when you became the moderator, so I don't know why you are so against this...

Personally it's the same to me, keep the rankings or not, but I agree with Tog that te06 rankings do not reflect the situation in te09 very well.

As I'm in charge of the Rankings, I will say only this for now - all points made on tournaments played on 06 won't be deleted. There are certain ideas for the next season Blacky and I came up with, about changes in tournaments and adjusting the rankings, but haven't made a final decision yet.
Algo, thx for some extra info about next season tournaments and points
Anyway, if someone was wondering where am I lately, I'm in the middle of the two weeks of exams on my college and should be back in 7 days.

Also want to add that there's about 35 tournaments in the calendar...so 35-11= 24...not such a huge difference after all... :D You should have atleast asked in a poll to delete all results, not do it on a personal whim...all I'm saying.

Re: How should the start rankings next year be determined?

Hi Stuey,
I have a suggestion. Since we are all following the real world's ATP tournament calendar and rules for the past and present, why don't we continue this tour into next year? In other words, we can keep this year (2008)'s ranking points for every individual, and in next year (2009), when we play a certain tournament (example: Australian Open 09), the players will enter that tournament with rank pts = total pts from last year's same tour (in this case: Australian Open 08 included) to present. After that tour finished, we can then delete the result pts in the same tour in 08 and replace that tournament's result with the new 09 tour's results.

So, what are the benefits of this tour ranking system?

Well, 3 things:
1) Ro.Fed will be happy cuz we will get to keep and carry our 2008 points into next year
2) Togtdayttai and S.Williamz will also be happy cuz next year's ranking system will reflect their performances in tours in TE 09 :P
3) everyone else is happy cuz we are all fans of tennis, and love to follow the real world's ATP calender, ranks, and rules :D :D :D

To Togtdayttai,

Hey bud, I think your idea of practice tournaments that don't count in ranking system in late Dec and early Jan sounds good. Maybe Blacky, Stuey and Chiller can look into it.

To Algo and everyone,

Thanks for the calendar info. Just one thing: Next year's real Tennis Master Cup will be officially moved from Shanghai to London.
