I think no one should care so much about the ELO, coz it's really not that accurate... It's good for give an idea of the approximate level, but not to brag "I have a bigger ELO than u !" ...

Lately, I'm even thinking about lowering periodically the ELO (likely every month), mainly to thwart the fact there's an infinite source of new ELO points coming from players testing the demo ; normally an ELO system should be done within a close environment with a defined number of players playing each other.
And if people want to be ranked on a real accountable ranking system, then the online ladder is a lot better.
