For or Against 117ms minimum Delay Rule ?

Postby manutoo » 02 Dec 2010, 12:40

Hello,

>> Please, in addition of answering the survey, add at least a post to say what you voted for & your current Online Tour ranking. <<

I noticed lately that Blacky highlighted a rule that I'm against to.
He didn't invented it and it seems it's more or less followed by the best tour players since a few months, although it was never written in the official rules in the Forum.

This rule is : Online Tour Matches should be played with a minimum of 117ms Delay.

This gives some problems, coz the TE is really not meant to be played with such high Delay.
The optimal Delay is 83ms and below ; 100ms is still ok, but already a bit too high ; 117ms is just plain too high.
Of course, when the 2 players are too far from each other, there's no other choice than to play with such a high Delay.

The main bad points with high Delay are :
- it protects experienced online players against new comers, even if they are experienced offline/LAN players
- physic inertia is almost turned off, which lead to unrealistic situation (see for example the returner standing near the center of the court)
- it's very hard (but not impossible) to aim at the net ; ball goes either close of the line, in the middle of the court, or out
- there's too much delay in the input in general
- and some other little things, like correction of aiming mistake, etc...

But Blacky raised a quite valid argument for the 117ms rule : often enough, you'll have to play with a distant opponent, so you'll be forced to play with that kind of Delay, so better to be used to it from the start & keep the play conditions as stable as possible from one match to another.

For my taste, I'd rather enjoy the most possible matches with low Delay & be forced to play a few ones with high Delay, even if it means I should do a few practice matches at 117ms Delay now & then to get used to it.
But I guess it's a matter of taste & as I don't play on the Tour, I'd like to gather the opinion of people playing here.

So the rule I'd want to see is : people can play with 117ms (or above) if they both agree to it, else they should play with Auto-Delay (or Auto-Delay + 16ms, to lower the chance to get lag during the match).
The rule Blacky wants is : people can play with Auto-Delay if they both agree to it, else they should play with 117ms Delay (or above).

So do you want to play all Online Tour Matches with a minimum of 117ms Delay ?

i voted the 2nd option, although the 1st one doesn't bother me. Here is what i think is the best thing for me : most games will be played anyway in 117ms, but with some oponents that you know will be close enough so that you would be able to play in lower delay, then you can play at lower delay ! If some opponent you don't know yet wants to try a lower delay (generally 83ms), then you can both try it and if the test is good enough you will decide by yourselves the best option. And if the rule stays at 117ms minimum, both players can agree to play in lower delay without telling anyone ;)

Now the only bad point about changing the rule is that the new rule will probably be less clear, and some annoying players could use this for some reason (the usual "i can't play in 117ms because it's ridiculous how slow it is, and even if we have some lag in 83ms i would prefer that because i think it's better" but the opponent will appreciate the "too much lag thing" differently and won't agree...endless problem somehow).

Here is my opinion, i guess it's not very clear but it's not easy to find the solution which would convince all players.

117 ms delay ? it's utopian for ASEAN cause u know that no one in ASEAN have that delay to EURO...
if u want everybody can play in 117 ms delay or lower, i think u shud make a new rule. No one in ASEAN to be accepted to play at anytour or something like this :applause:
Of course people in EURO have gud ping together like what ASEAN have

We would need at least 10 more votes, to reach at least 30 votes, to make this poll meaningful... :fear:

Ok, to get a better idea, I had to check who voted what...
So here the details of voters :
1) (for 117ms rule) , 13 votes ok, 3 don't count (1 double vote, 2 people who don't play anymore)
2) 1 vote is alright, another not sure if he's retired or not
3) 1 ok, 1 not sure
4) (against 117ms rule), 6 votes ok, 2 not sure, 2 don't play anymore

I didn't take the time to check the ranking of all voters though.

Anyway, I still think the 117ms rule shouldn't apply & that people can't be forced to play with such high Delay when it's not necessary.
Of course, if both players agree, they can play with 117ms.

Re: For or Against 117ms minimum Delay Rule ?

Postby Lucky Loser » 30 Jan 2011, 21:19

Well, I just had to post now... I'm kinda confused in all this... I asked moderator about this topic and I was told that i MUST accept the fact that I have to play 117 always, and that it's a new rule made by the result of votes over here. And than I looked at this Forum topic and I didn't see the FINAL decision about this rule, Manutoo kinda still leaves this subject opened for different arguments, which is cool. So I just wanted to ask - is it clear now that I have to accept this "new rule", or is it still opened for discussion? When this topic showed up, I voted for auto-delay because I always played like that in online matches. The exception is when there's bad connection between me and other player due to distance between us.. Than it's all up to agreement what is the best way for us to have a playable match... So my point is: Is there any final crucial decisions about this topic?

I didn't even realized how serious this topic is until I was strictly asked to play 117 instead of auto and than I kinda realized that my controls are quite weird sometimes in that conditions during the game, I literally couldn't move normally. So that's the only reason why I want this topic to be finished with a final decision which we will all respect. All the best guys!

PS It would be really cool if someone leaves a link if there's a topic about all this "Delay stuff", there are a lot of confused guys like me over here, who don't have a clue what's it all about... I know that because I chatted with few people about this. If there's no topic about explanation of this, maybe someone could explain it shortly and post it here and than when we realize what's it all about, we could repeat voting and see what will happen. I noticed there are some new players in the tour, so maybe we will have more votes. Maybe more people will be for 117, so I could start to get used to it and practice more. Peace. :thumbleft:
