Bug: shot goes down middle sometimes

Postby TennisElbower » 26 May 2026, 21:48

Sometimes when I hit a shot and I aim for a side, it will just default to the middle. Why is this happening? Any way to get around this problem?

Hello,

I guess you play with the keyboard, right ?

Try to use the numpad keys 4, 5, 6 & 8 instead of the arrow keys. (or J, K, L & I)

Hi Manutoo,

For me, it mainly happens when I'm running to the left and try to hit a down-the-line shot. Randomly, and for no apparent reason, it registers as a centered cross-court shot instead. Sometimes it happens even when I'm standing still, always aiming to the left. In a three-set match yesterday, it happened to me about 6 or 7 times. I thought it was my joystick controller, but talking to my opponent, they said they've experienced something similar.

It's strange because it doesn't make sense that I'm pressing left and when I release the joystick it shoots to the center and goes past randomly and rarely.

Could this be a bug?

I’m attaching two videos showing the issue so you can check it. I tested the joystick on a website and it doesn’t have any drift, nor does it seem to return incorrectly to its neutral position.

I also talked with people from our group, and 3 other players reported the same problem, always to the left side. I think it happens more often with normal acceleration shots. With regular shots it usually doesn’t happen, and I haven’t noticed it with topspin shots either. Also, the indicator showing where the ball will land should return to its position progressively, not all at once, in my opinion.

Because of this, I believe it’s not a joystick issue but something related to the game itself. I can’t add the links because I registered recently. Just add the “h” at the beginning.

I play on PS5, but other people who are experiencing the issue play on PC.

I play on the PS5 with a PS5 controller. I have had the issue with 3 separate controllers (including a razer raiju). I am convinced it is not a controller issue.

I have the issue with any type of shot, not just acceleration. My issue looks just like popidc's

I had a match the other day where it happened over 10 times across 3 sets. Happy to include a video if it helps.

popidc,
indeed, it doesn't look like a controller snapback, as the aiming zone should be more on the opposite side and then smoothly come back to the center in such a case ; there, it's just stuck.

Could you send me a Bug Report the next time it happens ? (HowTo => topic5-31732.php ) (in the first few points of a match, preferably)

Hi Manutoo,

I have just sent you the bug report through the game using the email popidc@gmail. It happened during the very first point of the match, and I am also attaching a video.

popidc,
I got 2 Bug Reports from you, but it's the exact same strike on the same point, right ?

Anyway, I checked carefully and actually it really looks like a controller snapback : the game says you pressed right for exactly 1 frame after stopping to press left, and after your controller is centered. I didn't recognize it in your videos because the aiming returns to the center very slowly when it's not far from it.

Could you try to focus on never releasing left or right before hitting the ball, and confirm that then it's not happening ?

Plus, if you learn to do that, you'll be more accurate in your strikes, and much more efficient when playing online. (explanations => https://www.managames.com/tennis/doc/Te ... meCreation )

Possibly, try to raise Settings -> Controls -> Player 1 -> Aiming Dead Zone from 45 to 80% to see if it helps.

Yes, sorry about that, I sent two identical reports because I didn't receive any confirmation on the first one and wasn't sure if it went through.

Regarding the issue, I tried setting the dead zone to 80% yesterday and the problem didn't occur, so I'll keep testing it.

I understand from your explanation after reviewing the report that when I release the joystick before the attack, it returns to center but must have a slight movement to the right, which the game detects as aiming in that direction, causing it to switch.

I am used to moving the joystick at the same time I hit the button. The problem is that when you have a lot of time because the ball is easy and slow, with my technique you have to let go of the stick so it doesn't go out. I will try the technique you suggested, but after playing for months, you know, it's hard to rewire my brain xD.

popidc,
your understanding is correct ; this behavior is called controller snapback and is unfortunately relatively common.

A few months back, one guy posted this trick to help you aim => https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/765 ... ded/760640
Robin_ITA wrote:I wish to give some advice to those who find it difficult with the aiming mechanism. Some say that you should start to push the Left Stick (the aiming stick) either to left or right about a second before the player hits the ball, which is fair enough. Another way of timing it is to push the Left Stick either to the left or right as soon as the ball bounces or hits the ground, and then the player hits the ball. The difference is that it is easier to move the Left Stick at the right moment when you can visualize the ball when it bounces. If you do it this way, usually your shots will always be in the court even if you push the Left Stick all the way to the extreme. Of course, the aiming can go wrong if your position is not correct to the ball even if you timed it right.
