Game speed

Postby nickkyrgiosfan » 01 Apr 2024, 05:19

Hello manutoo, I talked with you a few days ago on the comment section of the youtube video "Top Spin 4 vs [censored] vs Tennis Elbow 4" , I am the user JetMC254. Youtube kept deleting my comments, but I was posting a link to "Infosys analysis: Best performers at AO 2021". I tried posting the link here but it wouldn't let me.

In it, you can see that for the Aus open 2021, the fastest average forehand speed was Basilashvili, with 132 km/h. The 10th fastest was Pella, with 126 km/h. Therefore we know that in the Aus Open 2021, an average forehand speed of 126 km/h was faster than for 90% of all the 128 players at the Aus Open. So, an average forehand speed of 126 km/h is very, very fast.

In TE4, I feel that even with around 75% forehand power, I feel like my average forehand speed is more than 126 km/h. The normal shots are like 115-125 km/h, but, since it is too easy to do accelerations (even with modifying the controls to make them harder than Elite, like you said in amother post), I do way more accelerations than normal shots, and the accelerations at 75% forehand power go from 140 to 160 km/h, which is really high. In real life getting a 150 km/h groundshot happens only a few times in a match and when it happens it's almost always a finishing shot in a point, close to the net, for example, the third shot in a point, after a strong serve and a very weak return. In TE4 I feel like I get 150+ km/h way too often, even while playing on Incredible difficulty and controls harder than Elite. I even tried artificially decreasing the forehand and backhand power on Training club to a really small value but I still get 150 km/h too frequently.

I think the acceleration shot speed needs to be significantly reduced (and the normal shot speed a bit reduced), or at least the specific penalty for accelerations should be dramatically increased, so that for example I can only perform a really fast acceleration if the opponent does a safe strike and I am well positioned and spend like 3 seconds waiting. This is what I tried to emulate by modifying the controls, but it doesn't work the way I would like because it also affects the normal shots, I wanted to only make accelerations more difficult and imprecise. (Is there a way to do this? ).

My overall point is, the game right now feels too fast paced, it feels like watching a match at 2x speed. There shouldn't be 150+ km/h shots in every other rally, this should happen only a few times per set.

Hello,

for the little story, I saw your last YouTube comment something like 12 hours after you had posted it (by using the "sort by newest" option), and answered it and it looked like my answer stuck for more than 1 minute so I thought everything was alright and then after a while I checked again and both your comment and my answer had disappeared !

I was quite surprised and this shows that Youtube is really not the place for feedback and discussions...

Anyway, I had a look the other day at the AO 2021 stats and they were quite interesting, and the FH average speed for the top players was just a bit under the AO 2016's one.

Could you send me a Bug Report at the end of a match that you think shows well this issue ? (ie: too many accels, and too fast) (HowTo => topic5-31732.php )

I'll have a look to see how it goes and maybe spot a reason for all that. My current guess is that maybe your player is a tad short (ie: under 180cm), and thus enjoys the Shoulder Height accel way more often than wanted.

Currently, there's no way for you to tune only the acceleration parameters.

I feel the same way. I've been playing this game for 20+ years, and it is by far the best tennis game out there on any platform I believe, but ever since the previous version TE3 or TE2013, I feel the gameplay has become a little bit too fast/arcade, mainly on the faster courts. I have been trying to figure out if it is the court bounces and/or the speed of shots, and have narrowed it down to the acceleration shot. This shot has too much power and I think there should be a narrower shot speed gap between this and the normal shot. The acceleration shot (especially on the hard and grass courts) has a ping-pong speed effect. I even try to play along when watching a match on tv to compare, and it is faster in the game. But I think it is just the acceleration shot, and not the other shots. Even with the new modifier settings for this shot, it is too fast.

Yes exactly Brad. Watching a real tennis match and then watching a TE4 gameplay video, it's like TE4 is a match in 2X. I hope Manu will make the acceleration slower / more difficult, or at least provide us with the tools to change this ourselves

Ok. Reduce the acceleration speed, and then we'll have the problem of endless rallies like in TE2013. Or reduce the speed of acceleration AND the speed of the players.

Just wanted to add: I am playing on clay now, and the acceleration is pretty accurate for the most part I think, but on the other courts it is too fast. So on the higher bounces it is not much of a problem, but on the lower bounces of even a hard court that is when it gets too ping-pong like.

I'm using the default values. Playing on the Monte Carlo court right now.

I have the same feeling.
The speed on clay court feels right, but on a faster court I can easily hit 140+ kph shots.

The default values for just the regular game itself. I don't have any mods.

Yes, I feel like I can "fire at will" using the acceleration shot. I actually find myself holding back and avoiding using that shot sometimes, just to allow the CPU to be able to get to the ball. I play on Master, level 4. I find going higher than that makes the CPU too unrealistically fast. The CPU player is able to stop and turn instantly, when usually it takes a second to change directions to go back toward the other side of the court.

Average is not a good metrics because of dropshots or slice especially from BH. Ruud, Alcaraz often hit 100 mph+ from FH. Federer hit 104 mph FH like Alcaraz.

"Often" as in once or twice per match, sure. With the game as it is now, if you have more than 75% Forehand power, you can hit +100 mph once or twice per game. It's not realistic.
