New Zoom

Postby solarisaint » 18 Oct 2008, 22:59

I can't deny the fact that you can produce an amazing zoom cam in just a short period of time, which for some reason is denied in the tennis gamming industry, when it"s is loved by many. So it's really not possible to manipuate the split screen, full dynamic into one screen,
the reason Im saying that is because it looks like it's allready done or you didn't like my last posting under the New Dynamic cam. Im playing pc and console tennis games for around 12 years and it just seem's like that camera brings the most level of gratification and realism which is the only thing missing in this masterpiece you created in 2D no less, which I think will stay contemporary for at least 2 years. I guess Ill just have to live with full dynamic in split screen :cry:

I've noticed that when taking the ball early, even if it's struck in the center of the racquet and good position and everything, the player doesn't "get all of the ball" which results in a weak shot.
I've noticed this more predominantly when at midcourt and net, even though it happens at the baseline too. When I watch on tv and play in real life, half-volleys and volleys can have same smooth fast strike as long as it hits the sweet spot, but it seems like it doesn't happen in the game because of the quick reaction time, which seems to result in slower gameplay as one moves closer and closer to the net because of less preparation time. However, I feel that as long as it hits the sweet spot center of the racquet, it should have the same effect as that of a well-prepared shot.
I also wanted to add that it seems like the Defender profile still has more built-in topspin than other playing styles, but only when using the topspin button. If I hold the topspin button for a couple seconds, it actually can result in a very fast dip. (Actually, I've noticed this in other styles too, when holding the topspin button for a prolonged period, but Defender has even more of the effect). Maybe a cap on topspin would solve this, or just a tuning. But it's really only if the button is held for a bit.

There are still connection issues (the waiting on game / abort I mentioned earlier). I just tried to connect to a hosted game, and the screen said "Connecting...." After a few seconds, it said "Connection lost." Then, the game was available on the screen again, so I again tried to join. The screen showed "Connecting..." and would not respond past this. After a minute or so, the screen said, "An error occurred, can't create connection." This was on my Windows XP computer.

If this should be in the "New Full Dynamic Zoom" thread, someone please move it there. I put it here because this issue was also mentioned in this thread, and I suspect that more people read this thread and may contribute to it here.

I played solarisaint earlier, and he explained to me the view that he would like to have. I made some adjustments, and I think that I am pretty much able to illustrate what he means. Here is a capture of just one of the two views on split screen (the lower one):

Image

Now, he would like that view to be all that is shown (rather than having top and bottom). It is slightly different than the other views, but not by much. I think that it appears as it does because two views (from server and returner) are having to be fit into the height of the video area available, such that the images are compressed vertically. For example, you you display the game in a window with split screen turned off and make that window very short, so that it is the full width but not very tall, you get a view very similar to one of the split screen views:

Image

Image

It is kindof a neat view of things. I think it is the view of a very low camera, like the ones that you see on television in the little boxes in the walls behind the player. The view of the split screen is not something that I could exactly reproduce as described -- notice how the net appears much taller in the single split screen view than it does in the "short" window view above.

@Everybody :
Version updated :
- I think I located the bug that was making the game hangs in the online part : it was when requesting the server list, while there was no server waiting ; after, if u refreshed again, u couldn't get the answer of any newly creating server anymore ; ;maybe as well as if u were creating a host, it'd hang when exiting it
- Strike speed handicap for regular acceleration has been very slightly lowered

@Brad1981 :
No worry, I'm not tired from getting suggestions, it's very nice for me to have direct contact with final players, that's one of the reasons is some much better to work like this than in a big company..!
But I'm getting tired to always think about work, I have big trouble to let it go and find time to relax. But hopefully, the full version will be up & running in 2 weeks, with some nice sales, and at last I'll be able to relax... :)

>> taking the ball early
No, I don't think players can hit a full speed acceleration when doing half volleys.
Although, the handicap might be applied a bit too fast, so I just added a little zone where the handicap doesn't apply.

This handicap is also important for the gameplay overall balance.

>> Defender's Top Spin
yes, the Defender has a top spin bonus when doing the top spin strike, and yup, it's already capped to 100 rotations / second (which might be a bit more than the real life record, or the usual very high spin).

It's all wanted, and I posted explanations about this new defender skill a few weeks ago.

@Algo :
>> it was completely out of the chord
It is normal & ok : it's horizontally within the cords, but not vertically. So for the game engine, it considers it's stuck within the sweet spot.
Maybe one day I'll try to do an adaptive animation system that could change the strike to set the height of the racket according to the ball height.

@solarisaint :
If CC's screenshots correspond to ur idea, then once again, I reiterate : it can be done only with 3D courts, or at least with extended 2D courts, coz right now, I don't have anything to display up & down of this view ; ie: this view would lead to see above the "warm-up" panel, and I don't have this part of the courts.

@CC :
>> [Mail with link to tennis Videos]
U can post links to tennis video in the forum, it's ok... :)
Thanks for it, they could be useful.
I think I had a deep look at the double-handed forehand on one of these sites when I created it.

Thanks, Manutoo :) I didn't realize solarisaint wanted to see that very top area of arena or whatever -- although we figured you probably understood what he meant, and you clearly did :wink: .

I hope you have a nice break soon while we play each other in the final version :) It is going great right now! I love the mtbal...the ball can be made so large, like a boulder. It is so funny to be playing a match and see someone miss such as huge ball. :lol:

Ok last post before I go to sleep :)
With the latest update, it seems that the game speeded up immensely. I'm not sure if this is due to even faster acceleration, but I am noticing a lot of topspin (even with values set to 0). I normally play/test with every setting at 100 percent, and I have had to lower power for both me and CPU to 40 percent with very latest build and even that seems too fast (again could also be in combination with too much topspin). I have to admit, the faster gameplay seemed cool at first, but having to lower power of both me and CPU by 60 percentage points (from 100 down to 40) seems too much. Still seems fast. And with lot of topspin even tho I tried setting it at 0.

New Court

Postby solarisaint » 19 Oct 2008, 08:36

Thanks cc for your help, the first pic is on the money, I just was looking at it full dymanic no need to see over the warm up sign or maybe the warm up sign could of been moved to the side and replaced with some crowd.
maybe soon will have it. I know it will be a winner,
but getting the network bugs are paramount right now.
Thanks cc Thanks manutoo. also the dynamic full is perfect please don't touch :wink:

Manutoo,

I was playing the CPU player and having great difficulty winning a point (which is fine as it is good practice) as I keep selecting "Very much stronger" or whatever that top option is. Too win a point, I brought the CPU player over to the left and then hit their return shot in the air (before it bounced) over to the right side quite hard (ran into the ball like you said we could do). To my amazement, the CPU player was able to return this, although she did hit an error:

Hmm, I just played for first time today, and issue I had last night with the speed seems to not exist anymore...I will play more thruout the day just to make sure...

edit: so far so good. Weird, super fast gameplay happened only 1st time I played after installing, then went away.
edit #2: It got fast again. I was messing with settings in character sheets...but it seems like something triggers this...I can't pinpoint it.

Just 2 things for today. A lot of the errors I have been complaining about have went away. However, I have pinpointed the main one. It's when the computer hits a cross-court shot. Most computer errors involve hitting a cross-court shot and the shot can tend to float wide. This is with CPU on Incredible and 100% everything. Just wanted to make sure this is not a bug. It doesn't happen as much as at first, but it does happen a bit.

And, revisiting the color shade of the ball...I've noticed that when switching sides so that my player is on the far side, my player is also a darker shade. When the CPU switches sides, it is the same bright shade for both sides for him, but my player turns a little darker. Same with the ball. The ball was very dark at first before u addressed it; it's better now, but still not as bright as when on the near side. I checked in TE 2006, and these brightness shades differentials were not an issue in that version.

Constant zoom

Postby solarisaint » 20 Oct 2008, 09:53

Hi
I see you adjusted constant zoom, is their anyway you could keep the tight zoom on serve you just changed and then zoom out in full dynamic after the serve to see the other player fully, Just a thought for variation from the full dynamic. In other words it's full dynamic
with a nice zoom in serve, and maybe a nice zoom when he makes contact with his smash. ie... when he goes back for his smash "after" he raises his racket then zoom in for the smash. Just some feedback

Santi, I think Manutoo said it earlier, but you should try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete, then going under processes and ending TennisElbow.exe. I've had this problem too.
Record (since coming back from ban): 24-6
