Return of serve from the middle of the court?

Postby milos » 09 Aug 2007, 23:34

I know this is not supposed to be a real time tennis, but is it possible to work on the game and disable the possibilty of a return of the serve (especially first serve), from the middle of the court - the returner stands just behind the service line, and not the baseline. this thing really takes the advantage of the strong serve being disabled on fair mode, and makes it rather UNFAIR mode, as the return is almost impossible to get back. please work on this...

Hello,

1- what kind of return players are doing ? acceleration ? slice ? where do they send the ball ?
2- if you serve on the external line, they can catch the ball ? on the good side of the slice effect, they sill can catch the ball ?

1. they do an acclerataion return and its so fast that you can only get it if you accidently go that side of the court.
2. yes, yes

it's like they're standing in the middle, and they go the side where you've served there is no way they don't hit a winner of return, it is very annoying, and plus that can never happen in real tennis, absolutley not. some people are using this thing, and it's about the only plus they have in their game, i mean it is possible to work around this but still, it's not fair...

lol yea I notice this too. They move up to a couple feet behind the SERVICE line for return and basically they guess left or right and hit a fast acceleration shot. I'm a pretty decent volleyer, so I am able to get up to the net quick enough and cut off these fast returns some of the time, but if someone is a baseliner and don't have that extra jump or 2 at net (assuming they even come to net), it would be practically impossible. But if you don't come to net against this, your chances are even worse.
The people I've seen do this actually play very well otherwise. If they would take the time to practice the normal return of service, I'm sure they would do just as well at that...

Hmm...I'm suprised some people find it hard to play against these kind of players...I think they are the easiest to play against...
There is enough time for the server to actually see which side the receiver guesses and then serve to the opposite end...it's extremely easy! Just look carefully at the opponent... I love to play against these players because they allow me to serve aces all the time...

Was this what you were talking about...or did I get it wrong?

Yes, you are right about the movement Williamz. I am able to "hold" my serve for that split second to see where they move. However, I have encountered some who move at the same exact time the serve is struck, and then there are those who fake one way and then go the other, by which they start moving one way right before (like 1 millisecond) the serve then cut back the other way. :)

you are both right about this, and I use the same tactics against them, it's just very annoying, and is not very realistic...

Hi Brad,

I have also encountered those who have "mastered" this guessing style to perfection  , but I'm still able to serve aces or their returns are easy because they are usually late to receive. I have played quite a lot of these players and I have had never any problems with them. The only one I had problems was you, since you did it in a tiebreak where it caught me by suprise. Great tactic, btw.
Anyway, what usually also helps, is to hit the really weak serve, that is very short, you know what I'm talking about, and then rush the net. That way it's very hard for them to hit a hard return.
I'm just suprised because I have never had problems with them. Very rarely I hit the serve at them, and when I do I just guess the direction of the return and usually win the point anyway.

Don't they put some accelerations in the net ?
I did a quick try against the CPU, and it doesn't look too easy to do returns like that... :?

Manu,
I have not encountered anyone who put their returns in the net. The CPU on incredible level may do this occasionally, but online, it always clears the net.
Again, for us net rushers and those with quick reflexes it doesn't seem too much of a problem...sometimes gets to deuce and ad-opponent about once a set...but for those who stay back and non-volley character types, it's killer.

Could someone do a couple of screenshots to show where they stand exactly, and in what direction they run ..?

The stance is that of the player on the far end of the court. Perhaps even just a little more back than that. And the person either guesses to the left or right.
