Serving way too effective in online games!!!!

Postby Williamz » 18 May 2007, 21:43

Hi,

There is one serious fault in this otherwise great game, and it is serving efficacy in online games. It seems the newest build made the fair mode(75%) service as effective as in the free mode. I'm a pretty good returner but it is getting to my nerves that all of my matches are nothing but serving aces.
Not only is it unrealistic to hit 2-4 aces per game, even against very good players, it's also NOT FUN.
Please reduce the importance of serve both in the free mode with the strong serve and also in the fair mode, so that the point would actually begin properly sometimes.

Thx.

Hello,

nothing should have changed about the serve with the latest build : it's still limited to 75% in Fair-play & Tourney modes, and the powerful serve is disabled if the lag is at 50ms or above.
But maybe u just played a few games with a lag at 33ms or less, so your opponent was able to do the powerful serve.

What was the average speed of his serve ?

I think the serve is limited to 50% actually.

However it is, the serve is way too effective in my opinion, lag or no lag.
Really are you sure you don't agree? It's WAY too effective. :D

Ok maybe nothing changed but still! I mean I have been playing for a long time and I really hate the serves. Sigh.

I'm not trying to be difficult but this is something I've been planning to complain about for a long time now...
I just think it would be a lot better game if aces were less frequent and more points would be won during rallies.
And I did like the new update, mind you.

Hello Williamz,

yup, I think too that the serve is a bit too effective and leads to too many aces.
As so far no one complained about it, I didn't make any change to it. But I already planned to change it for TE2007.
But if more people complain about it, maybe I'll try some changes on TE2006 directly.

I don't think that the serve is too efective, because it's not! You just need to parctice!

I played many matches with various opponents (really good ones, believe me!) and to some of them I barley make 3-4 aces per match.

If somebody wants I can arrange you a match with some of them, and you'll see what I'm talking about :D

His problem maybe lays in FREE MODE, where services reach above 200kmh, and that is too fast, but in fair mode where are services aprox. 180kmh service is not causing a problem at all, and it's in normal limits

Perhaps a "practice mode" for serving can be created for TE2007?

Well in free mode the serve is just ridiculous, and in fair mode its just bearable if you practice like hell, but playing isn't very enjoyable, because you must concentrate like there is no tomorrow when returning. And still too many aces.
So I think even in the fair mode the serve effectiveness should be slightly recuded. Then it's perfect.

we played yesterday one set and you managed to hit 1-2 aces, and I'm pretty bad at catching services, so I don't see problem.

Practice is all you need! You can't become better over night!

Hello,

one important tip to return a lot more services :
instead of looking the ball, just look the cross appearing when you have your preview set to "All" or "Service". It's a lot faster to know where's the ball going..!
I don't consider this cheating, coz it can be seen as a counter-measure against the lag... ;)

But anyway, I think the service still needs a bit of tuning, mainly coz of the lag, it's still harder that it should be to have enough reflexes to do some good returns.

Hello,

I'm new here and I must concurr that, at least for weak beginners like me, the serve is far too effective. It's quite simple : the skill required to return well is far higher than the one you need to serve (which, by the way, is not the case in real tennis).
So I would also like the service to be nerfed.
But if good players feel it makes the game poorer and less interesting, I'll shut up and practice !

it's kinda true, but I'd strongly balance it coz in real life, good servers do aces, and even put the returner at stake on almost every of their 1st serve when they don't do ace... Such as it is in Tennis Elbow... ;)
