Half-volley help, please

Postby lreese » 24 Sep 2011, 19:12

Hi all,

is there any special way to handle half-volleys or very low volleys in the game (elite/sim mode, Junior 5-ish difficulty)? My player insists on hitting a full blown ground stroke on anything below the knees which ends up in the spectator stands. Thankful for tips

Some game engine fine tuning needed, perhaps? It doesn't percieve the player to be in a volley position so it makes the wrong shot selection?

Yeah I was thinking of that, but sometimes when I play CPU, he does the half volley!

In that case I would suggest that half-volleys are too difficult to execute and needs to be simplified. It's extremely annoying to see the player take a full swipe at a low volley and then lose the point.

The kind of strike (baseline or volley) depends of where you stand when your player starts to strike. If you stand after the ball bounce, he'll do his baseline strike, else his volley strike.
Note: a low volley is not a half-volley ; half-volley is a strike occurring just after the bounce ; in TE, it's not possible to do successfully this kind of strike, except on very slow balls, using the slice or the safe strike.

Ok. So its only on genuine halfvolleys this happens, not the very low volleys. then maybe adding some way to handle half volleys should go on list for future improvements? Meanwhile Ill try using the safe shot. BTW, Ive seen the Cpu do the same thing on occasion. Although he is much better at backing up to get a good ground stroke than a human can possibly be.

Edit: I just saw the CPU hit a drive up on the stands that was definitely a volley (above the knee, but below the net, very close to the net), and not a half-volley. It was a first volley on an approach from a drive in a baseline rally. This is usually when it happens (or after a serve) but also when you already are established at the net.

Is something like that what you meant?

I think a solution would be if the player would bend his knees to get this kind of balls.

EDIT: if it's not working, right click and 'open in new tab'

Might be. BUt I think it happens when the bounce is even closer or maybe at very same position as the player. And definitly sometimes when it's still in the air but close to the ground. When you play Serve and Volley it happens a lot.

Half-Volley's are only possible if you leave your strike at neutral (ie. just move the arrow keys, and when you approach the 'just-bounced' ball at the net, don't press any type of strikes). Except they suck, because they land mid-court and have 0% chance of creating a winner, but they're effective as it sets up well for a volley winner.
