Basic question about service

Postby El_Dada » 23 Apr 2009, 17:58

Hi, i bought this game a few weeks ago, and i have enjoyed it a lot. But i have some questions:

1.- How do i serve decently? In world tour i have 55% in every serving stat, but i still make lots of double faults per match and i think i have made just 10 aces in 2 years in the game. So.. what is the key to do a good service? do i hold the button and i move the stick when the ball is at it's highest?

2.- In higher levels, if the CPU has mid-high serve stats, they always serve wide and/or they usually hit the line... which makes them to do a lot of aces per match. Maybe this is just a complain and i just suck at returning their serves or there is some strategy instead of activating the serve preview?

3.- At last... i think in this game the defensive players with high top-spin are heavily overrated, they are almost impossible to play against (specially in clay), even if you have patience and do lots of slices, they always find the way to make you play behind the baseline and they make annoying in-the-line winning strikes. I wonder if i'm not the only one who thinks this way.

Anyways, congratulations for your work, the gameplay feels solid and I've had hours of pure tennis fun.

Hello,

1- to do aces easily, u need to have a service power % a lot above ur opponent speed %.
Using slice helps also to do aces.
To avoid to do double fault, serve using the b2 ( read here : https://www.managames.com/tennis/doc/Ten ... ml#strikes )

2- do very little left-right steps while waiting to return, and stand a bit far from the baseline ; personally, I also use the serve preview, coz I think it's harder to see the ball in-game than in real life (coz of mono-vision instead of stereo-vision)

3- other people have trouble with them as well... As it needs a lot patience and good science of positioning to beat them... :fear:

and thanks for the congratulations... :)

55% in serve is too low to hit many aces, even against players with low stats. You have to use the "safe" serve (b2) to have any consistency.

I don't like using serve preview since it's so unrealistic, but to play your best, you must use it in this game. Like Manu says, you can't read the serve effectively due to the vision and angle.

The topspin players are difficult, but fair. It used to be a lot worse in previous versions. I think the problem is that low topspin players are too easy. Most matches, you can hit accelerated winners whenever you feel like it against them... then the topspin players are a big change. Also, if you're going to play online, get used to the topspin and long rallies. 8-)

Thanks for the answers!, i play with build 29 i think (a bit old), but it's because i modded my Players.ATP file and i don't want to lose my saved file if i install newer versions (or to lose my modded files).

I think i'll start using the serve preview, it's hard to read the direction of serves. Also i'll focus on increase the serve power, let's see if that works.

And yes, maybe the low-spin players are a lot easier (I didn't have problems beating Roddick but Marrone kicked my ass :annoyed:).

Thanks :)

El_Dada, backup ur modified files before installing the new update, and restore them after, it should be fine.
If you want to be 100% sure to avoid a manipulation error, install the latest version in a new directory, and copy ur mod files there...

I've never had a problem with my modified players.ini when using new builds, because the Last Played.ini file isn't written over. I think you'll be fine, El_Dada, but I'd backup the players.ini file anyway.

If you edited any files in the .PAK file, then that will be erased.
