General discussions about the 3rd edition of Tennis Elbow

Postby S.Williamz » 10 Nov 2008, 07:43

I hope the volleys stay as they are. With enough practice I have gotten the hang of them really well(and I don't even have nearly 100% points in volleys or net presence). It would be a HUGE shame if they are too easy, especially in online play. The danger is that they become an easy way to make points, like in TE06, and then the game becomes just volleying. It's already quite easy to make points with serve and volley online, but still the returner has a realistic change of passing the server and breaking, especially since the volleyer makes some errors now and then. I hope it stays this way.

Volley Sensitivity

Postby btaylor » 10 Nov 2008, 08:09

In real tennis when I come to the net I'm going to win 60% or so of my volleys and if it poses a problem for my opponents, so much the better. I too have TE2006 and while I agree that volleying was way too easy at almost 90 to 100% I don't feel it would destroy the game to adjust the sensitivity just a tad. You can still make volley errors. Like I said in my previous post if you put yourself in an OBVIOUS winning position you should be able in most instances to do just that. Win the point. :shock: Also in real tennis if my opponent chooses to come in against me I 'm also very competent at causing him a lot of problems 8-)

Well I disagree, because I don't have any problems in "obvious" winning situations to hit a good volley...maybe you need more practice, or then the problem is that the CPU runs impossible balls in the master and incredible level(which I think is the point as well).
I have already noticed that the volley has huge potential in online matches to be a very good method of winning points, if it's made easier then it becomes too good. I don't see how a "tad" adjustment to sensitivity makes any difference, any difference that you can't improve with practice.

I am just worried, I don't want this game to become a volley show as well.

Well I wouldn't have anything against some tweak, but you never know what will happen, it might make a huge difference to the effectiveness of volleys in the long run, when players get better and better. As I said before I really hope that won't happen. :D

@Algo :
I think I finally got the Danger Zone disappearance bug..!
And thanks for the stats bug report... :)

@Brad1981 :
The lighting is global, u can't change it in only 1 case.
But the ambient light is most seen with the reverse camera.

Volley aiming sensitivity has already been discussed : lowering it would make it too easy to do reflexes volley.

@milos :
I added a forced ball bounce, let me know if it's ok or not.

@Philly :
Maybe I'll add the Challenge system when I'll have the courts in 3D... :roll:

@btaylor :
Maybe I should give a try again, but when I played at volley a lot with the Beta version, it felt I could win most of the "easy" volleys, if not on 1st shot, then on the 2nd at worst...
The Master CPU is already a bit superhuman in his reflexes, and the Incredible is totally superhuman, so it surely helps him to catch most of ur volley... But still, a good acceleration on volley on a easy ball should smash them away...

okay.... the one boucne before the serve every time is really annoying. IT TAKES WAY TOO MUCH TIME! I cant finish a game because of this. The old way was better when you just serve and the player doesnt bounce the ball at all. I cant see how you think this might be an advantage when players just serve immedietly after a point. First of all youre not playing the game to just take forever to finish it. No you wanna play quickly so u dont spend a half an hour on 1 game like i did. Plus if players dont wanna play that quikly then dont serve immedietly after the point.
Also dont say as a response to just buy the game because i dont have the money for that. Plus if i just buy the game it would still have the same lame problem like not buying it. A WASTE OF 30 bucks is what thaat purchase would be.
OVERALL this new feature takes away from the game instead of adding to it. FOR ALL OF U that would rather have the one bounce just WAIT for one second so it does like the last version. AND IF UR OPPONENT IS DOING IT DONT PLAY WITH THEM. THERE THAt soLVES YOUR PROBLEM!

the danger zone still not appearing sometimes...
one parallel backhand and one cross forehand with a right handed-single handed backhand, master level-with, defender style and sublevel 10 and all at 100%
also, i installed the "newest" version but it says build 16...

Tsonga, in real tennis do your opponents ever bounce the ball one or more times or do you ask them not to? If so, do they comply? I think not, because it's part of their service rythym. In virtually every match I've ever seen, whether amateur or professional, they bounce the ball 3 or more times minimum (don't EVEN bring up Djokovic!) . I play the CPU a lot and if I tend to get a little too impatient and frustrated I sometimes won't bounce the ball at all before serving. I've seen the CPU server bounce the ball at least 10 times and THAT can get annoying. I feel that Manu's goal is to give a more realistic tennis experience to the game and a ONE ball bounce shouldn't destroy the game. All in all, I and others think Manutoo is doing a wonderful job!! :roll:

Btaylor, bouncing the ball once is fine. However, the ball bounce is too slow. I think the point of TE 09 is to have the gameplay be realistic, not the whole thing. If Manutoo wanted the whole experience to be realistic, there would be a break on the changover after odd-numbered games. The ball-bounce like it is is a waste of time. People can get in place in the amount of time it took before, or if they couldn't, one short bounce would be enough.

during an online match the serve without a bounce was a really bad thing, as a lot of players would serve right away and use this to surprise the reciever, which is unfair, and also unrealistic, in real tennis no one serves without bouncing the ball. the one bounce doesnt slow the game, but gives enough time for the reciever to place himself for the return.

manutoo,
perhaps you could leave this "must bounce the ball at least once before to serve" thing, but extend the duration of demo vs demo online match? :)

[EDIT: author = btaylor ]

Has anyone heard of "quick serving"? I suspect that in some on-line matches SOME players may be attempting to do just that, not necessarily everybody. Unfortunately this seems like a case of the "few making it hard for the many" :? Just as Brad1981 and myself seem to be in the minority about volley sensitivity, maybe you guys may be the same about the one bounce service situation. We will just have to wait and see what the majority and ultimately Manutoo have to say about it. Not every suggestion I have gets implemented in the game...some do, some don't...Manu has been more than democratic in his attempts to please us. I for one think it's a great game well worth the money and whoever doesn't, well, they DO have a choice.....

1) To clarify, when I mentioned volley sensitivity, I also meant groundstrokes closer to the net also. Like when the opponent hits a drop shot and I try to put it away with a groundstroke, the sensitivity seems too much to the left/right. So it wasn't just volleys per se. It was just plays in general that are closer to the net. Actually, I have more of a problem with the smash and groundstrokes when closer to the net than with volleys. These seem to be more problematic with the sensitivity due to the time required to prepare these shots. When there is too much time (as in the case with returning a drop shot with a groundstroke, and an overhead smash) the sensitivity is more of an issue. So actually with volleys, its not as bad. It's just the other 2 types of shots I mentioned.
2) I didn't like the quick-serving, however, as Tog said, the 1-bounce thing seems to take too long. Wish there was a way to kind of close the gap a bit.

I really, really dislike the bounce before service. It is really boring to wait. In real life you need the bouncing because you need to concentrate a lot more on the service action, but in this game you just serve. There should be a delay however, but a lot shorter.
