Desynchronization errors

Postby CC » 07 Nov 2009, 20:47

There are so many desynchronization errors now with online games. A kick serve to the CPU player when playing doubles online for me frequently causes an error, and just in general, there are too many. Can the game be made more stable?

Attached is a .dmo of a recent match. The first game is OK (may be an error there), but as the match progresses, the errors become numerous. Now, my opponent probably was cheating with lag, and I imagine that this could increase the number of these errors. The lag as indicated by ping was very good (around 110 ms, I think). But, he was doing something to disrupt this to his advantage. He started hitting lots of lobs and creating lag. What happens is that the sensitivity to the controls changes, such that my player will respond more slowly or faster to the controls randomly; so, when trying to return a lob, my player may move "two feet" with a pressing of a direction key for .05 second and then move only .1 foot for te next .05 second of the same key press. However, the ball's path is not affected (it doesn't curve from side to side -- it remains going in the same direction, as it should). This makes it extremely difficult to position my player to return the lob.

The errors, if not due to induced lag, reflect an issue with the current release. If you need any logs, I can send them.

I begin to wonder if you'd have any problem with your connection... You seem to encounter a lot of problems... :fear:

I understand why you would think that. However, it is not the case. But, if you know of some way to verify this, I'll try it. If you want to treat my comments as just something wrong with me all of the time, fine. I was hoping that you would want to improve your game. Oh well.

ManuTOO,

I will try to better document some of these issues, and then I'll provide that information to you. Please tell me, though, how you think that any connection issue on my side could cause a desynchronization error with a certain serve hit to the CPU player in an online game in doubles, such that the error occurs every time that I use that serve (keep having to redo serve) until I finally quit with that serve and use a different one to get past that point. Isn't it more likely that a bug in the game or something to do with the game is causing the error? Even if there were a connection problem on my end, why can't the game handle this? Certainly my connection isn't changing when I use this serve, get the error, use the serve, get the error, use the serve, get the error, don't use the serve, don't get the error. I didn't change my connection to not get the error. This happens in many matches. How could this possibly be related to my connection? Why can't the game deal with things like this better? Why does it have to generate so many errors. By the way, I am using the same connection that I have always used, going back to TE2006. I was playing wirelessly lately, but for the last 24 hours, I have switched to wired, and that made no difference. I could say more, but it wouldn't be appreciated, I think.

Now, if you accept that possibly some are using lag switches, then maybe this may help. Otherwise, what are you left with? Bugs in the game, I think.

I was "suspecting" ur connection more about the different lag problems u encounter.
And I may have already told u that, but latency on Internet is often pretty inconsistent, so it's kinda normal u meet regularly lagging connection... (coz the game Lag is set at start of the game, and is not changed even if the connection quality changes over the match)

For the problem about kick serving on the CPU, could u give a try with a clean demo version ? (install it in another directory than your current one)
And let me know if it happens as often or not...?
