"the animation in the game does not work" : sorry, it's not an anim. It's a basic model for the software 3DS Max 8 (or higher but then you can't export it on the game then).
Download the soft and you will be able to open those files.
You can download it (only 3 DS max 8 version of 2009/2010)for free trial version for only 30 days and try to make anims if you want. Have fun
