After downloading the new update, no matter what I set the "play period" to, it always begins at the end of 1972/1973. I've tried redownloading the game and many different things. Please help! thanks

Hello,

it means your player base is incorrect.

The easiest is to delete it and use the official base. You could also grab the base from the latest Modding SDK if you need.
