Wimbledon is slower than Roland Garros ?

Postby manutoo » 14 Jul 2019, 11:25

Hello,

I read this article this morning https://www.lemonde.fr/tennis/article/2 ... 16659.html (in french) with several tennis players (including Federer) stating that Wimbledon grass was very slow, even possibly slower than Roland Garros !

As a stunning example, the serve & volley rate for men dropped from 33% in 2002 to 5% in 2019 (before the quarter-finals), and 1% for the women..!

I'd like to know what are the average rally lengths of Wimbledon 2019 Federer vs Nadal & Djokovic vs Bautista, and the ones for Roland Garros 2018 & 2019 Nadal vs Thiem.

Would anyone here be able to get their hands on these numbers ? I did a quick search, but official match stats don't report them anymore... :sweat:

There is a site called tennisabstract which has a lot of detailed match statistics.

It's all manually collected so not every match is posted but from what I've searched is that only the Djokovic vs Bautista is not available.
I would post the direct links to the match pages but I sadly can't because I'm a new member.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip !

I checked this site, but it seems they don't give the average rally length per match.

However, they have a "Point outcomes by rally length" so it gives a hint at the average rally length
- 2019 Roland Garros F: Rafael Nadal vs Dominic Thiem => http://www.tennisabstract.com/charting/ ... Thiem.html
- 2018 Roland Garros F: Rafael Nadal vs Dominic Thiem => http://www.tennisabstract.com/charting/ ... Thiem.html
- 2019 Wimbledon SF: Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal => http://www.tennisabstract.com/charting/ ... Nadal.html
- 2019 Wimbledon F: Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic => http://www.tennisabstract.com/charting/ ... kovic.html

So by comparing the ratio between "All: 10+ Shots" & "Total", it seems the grass is still significantly faster than clay, as that ratio is much lower on grass ; however, by comparing the ratio between "All: 10+ Shots" & "Total", the difference gets smaller, so I can guess it proves that grass isn't that fast anymore... :thinking:
