Service Direction - Receiving

Postby Guest » 07 Dec 2025, 14:19

Hi,

I've been playing TE4 on PC since early access and I am hoping you guys might be able to give me some suggestions on receiving serve?

I am able to beat club level way to easily so I thought I would bump it up and try the next 2 levels junior and pro.

On both of these levels I just seem to get aced continuously and for the life of me I can't guess the direction of my opponents serve. Is there any indication on where my opponents serve is going to go? By the time the shot box shows up on the ground the ball has pretty much flown past me?

Please help because I love this game.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Guest,

When it comes to returning serve, how close are you to the baseline?

This can be a huge factor in how much time you have to prepare, on clay for example, I tend to stand as far back as possible for the first serve return, and when the second serve starts, I inch closer towards the baseline to take the return early. If you are really struggling, you can turn down the serve ratings for your opponent in training club for more realism.

On Grass and Hard, I would stand between the back of the court and the baseline as it gives you the most optimal position, try to also count how many times your opponent goes out wide or down the T, as you can begin to see some patterns,

As I say the game is fantastic, and will be getting more updates next season hopefully, but again, I hope this helps,

Thanks,
Scott

Guest,
read here => https://www.managames.com/tennis/doc/Te ... tml#return .

And if it's still too hard => set AiSlowerServer to 10 under [Game] in your Tennis.ini to lower by 10% the CPU service speed. (HowTo => topic19-32161.php ) .

Hi Scott and ManuTOO,

Thanks so much for the tips and for the information on how to turn down the speed because I didn't know you could do that.

I do stand very close to the baseline so I will try standing further back before I start playing with the serving speeds.

Thanks again for your help, it's truly appreciated.

The AiSlowerServer applies only to the first serve of the CPU or to the second serve as well?

I think there’s an issue here. The second serve is already fairly easy to return, even without slowing down the AI’s serve.

So if we slow the AI’s serve, the second serve will become extremely easy to attack, by using an acceleration strike, making it very easy to win the point.

I can already do this without slowing the AI’s serve. The second serve is not the problem, the first serve is the one that is very hard to return.

Nicky Gi.,
AiSlowerServer is a last resort option for people with low reflexes; if 2nd serves are already too easy for you, then you should be okay using the autopos trick.

If not, check you're in Game mode on your TV, so the input lag is minimal.
