Down the line shot accuracy

Postby anrox335 » 30 May 2025, 13:56

I feel the down the line standard forehand and backhand are too short and accurate. Given the lesser distance compared to cross court shots for the ball to go down, there should be large number of outs and nets with this shot. Also, the average depth can be higher if the shot is well prepared.

Hi, in my experience going down the line is always risky and the ball can land long from the fh side most than anything and can go wide or too central from the bh side (i play 1 hander backhand), and also if you go down the line with normal acceleration and prepare with time it lands with good depth. Also if you misshit just a little an acceleration down the line or are not well prepared you're gonna miss most of the time in my experience competing online, so imo the shot is fine.

I feel the ball is way too short and feels a bit unrealistic. I mainly play offline against the CPU, so my experience might be different.

Well it all depends on your personal level, the level of the CPU, and also the amount of topspin you use. If you play against anything lower than lets say master 10 then if you are a good player, you might have always enough time to accelerate so you might not have experience playing pushed to the very limits, it all depends. Also if you play with high topspin accelerations might land a bit shorter. I play around 45-57 during the year, changing depending on the tournament being played, and my accelerations (cross and DTL) always land deep if I hit them clean and well prepared. Also, the height of the ball you're hitting also affects. When the ball is lower changing direction is more risky and the shot tend to be more loopy, in the contrary if you hit an accel DTL off a high ball, the ball will go more straight through the air and land deeper in general. It's all contextual, I've never felt accels down the line land short when done correctly (mine and the opponent's too)
