Tips on serve return - Pro level

Postby dimcoe » 17 Jul 2024, 20:43

Anyone has tips on serve return?

I switched to Pro 1 level recently, and though I can keep my own in rallies, I'm really struggling with the 3rd strike, after my return (opponents getting 90%+ on first serve points won because of this). I typically get the ball back, but then suffer a winner immediately afterwards. Often my return seems decent enough, sometimes slow but deep and full of topspin, sometimes powerful and far from the centre, but no matter what the AI routinely hits close-to-the-line winners (and occasionally, when I try getting back, dropshot winners).

I suffer this problem also. I try to return it to the backhand, but often times I just get a cross court winner for my trouble! I suspect I need to "git gud", but I also don't know tennis very well so it could also be a strategy/tactics issue on my part also.

My huge frustration right now is the CPU rushing the net after serves. I still don't know how to counter this effectively.

I'm also having trouble with the serve-volley players, so far I've been avoiding choosing those players as opponents in the hope that later on I'll get better at it. Defensive lobs sometimes work, and sometimes the short strike for a passing shot, though I'm struggling to time the short ones right so that they don't end up being high and central.

I think I may be missing something regarding the serve returns: it's normal to suffer winners if the return is poor (mid-court, central), but often I get that even with seemingly decent returns (I also often go for the backhand).

Thanks, I had seen it and tried some of that. I don't get aced so often (maybe 3-4 per match, and typically I ace as much), just apparently good returns routinely leading to on-the-line 3rd strikes. I guess I just have to practice more to figure this out.

One thing that seems to have helped in the return was to keep the shot button pressed for longer, now I managed to drop my opponent's first serve points won to around 75%.
