New running animations : good or not ?

Postby manutoo » 03 Jun 2024, 16:50

Hello,

in today's SubBuild ( = 2024.6.3), there's a new running forward animation, as well as a new running backward animation. What do you think of them ?

Reminder : after the Playstation port, I'm hoping to do something like this => https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLSj6K_1s_s .

I like it, I could not test because I have Linux, but I have seen the game on youtube on the channel Zappingol Sport, in my opinion it looks much better.

The new running model is way better so it's a good update Manu! Now you should improve anims when players hit low balls on the run I think, sometimes they hit moonballs, players have their back pulled behind instead of bent on their knees with a rotation from shoulders and hips (if you see what I mean)

I don’t really understand why they were changed, they look quite creepy, and players feel slower. All the running animations especially when not running to hit a ball, look like they’re jogging like Forrest Gump. However making some movements more fluid may help when modding animations of real players, hope that is the case.

I dont know if its just I'm not used to them yet or not, I think visually they are fine but they seem to make it harder to position properly for an accel? And on the backhand side especially its quite erratic when it switches from movement to stroke anim. Honestly changing the movement anims does affect the gameplay, whether it technically doesnt stat wise or mechanics wise. The positioning is strange for me with these new anims, resulting in many more green errors and slower acceleration shots. I assume I just need to get used to them, but completely changing the movement animations and saying "no gameplay changes" is really not the case here. I think a lot of players will find it difficult to play at the same level as before especially when they aren't used to them.

Steph,
better strikes animation in all positions would require manually creating the anims. I'll likely do a try someday with 1 forehand, but it might not happen before a long long time... :fear:

squeakybum,
many people don't like the previous animations because they are not motion-captured and thus the player feels stiff.

The run speed didn't change at all.

I agree the new animation doesn't match exactly the attitude of a tennis player, that's why I wasn't sure if it was an improvement or not and opened this poll. :blackeye:

KINGBARBOZA,
the shoulder position likely changed by 20~30cm (and thus the racket more or less as well), which means your overall visual clues to position your player on the run changed and thus you need a little time to adapt to the new running anim. Except that, there are indeed 0 mechanical gameplay changes : you can replay an old match recording with the new running anim and it'll work the same as the previous version (ie: you'll get as many desyncs with both versions).

Once the run is over the anim is the same though.

fabos,
at the end of the run, at worst, only the first 0.25 seconds of the animation should have changed. If done on the run, it's more, and if done in position, then it shouldn't have changed.

This is one of the most noticeable and biggest gameplay changes in the last 6 months, it completely changes how you hit the ball and position for shots which is the most important aspect of TE and hitting good shots. I think you should have waited at least until after Roland Garros ends. Every player I have spoken to online are complaining that they cannot hit the ball well, due to the positioning changes. Is there anyway to maybe visually keep the new anims, but to not mess with the positioning by 20-30cm like you said? I think with some tweaks they could be really good and better than the old anims.

KINGBARBOZA,
it took me 15 minutes to get used to the new anims in 95% of cases and I'm 47 years old with a brain half-frozen... :blackeye:
For me, the change on the accel of the previous update is a lot more game-breaking (at least on clay) than anything else that occurred in the past year.

If you look at the pelvis or center of mass, it's nearly identical to before.

If I put the shoulders back then the player will look upright & more stiff, and thus unnatural like before and it'd cancel 50% of the reason for the change.

I'm going to see if there's a nice way to allow people to use the previous running animations for the next update.

fabos,

You're right, the slower accels I'm feeling is probably a result of the previous update actually and not the new animations. However on the run shots are definitely affected by the new anims, much more difficult to hit than before.
