CPU aggressiveness and other feedback

Postby chipandcharge » 29 Dec 2022, 20:20

Hi Manu and everyone,

With more than 200 hours played, it is more than time to say thanks to you Manu and give some feedback.
Comparing TE2013 and TE4 is like apples and oranges. TE4 is way more realistic than TE2013 gameplay-wise, with its slower pace, variations, and animations.
Even if I prefer a timing-based approach when it comes down to inputs, the game is globally satisfying to play and can be quite immersive regarding feelings.

However, I find the biggest problem for me lies in the too-high aggressiveness of the CPU. I'm playing around Pro 8 / Master 3 difficulty depending on the day (otherwise too easy / too strong), and the CPU (unless a defender) is playing the match "alone". It almost systematically has higher unforced errors and winners than me unless every shot I take is an acceleration.

I don't know if this issue is only about me and my approach to the game tho. :fear:

Maybe you would know a way to "fix" this fairly small inconvenience?

Anyway, thanks again for being there to offer one of the rare good tennis games at a very decent price, and with transparency in its development :applause:

PS: I forgot to mention other potential areas of improvement, notably :
• the drop shot effectiveness is too low, maybe because the CPU tends to stay too close to the baseline when attacked).
• the lift effectiveness, also maybe related to the fact that CPU sticks to his baseline and hits high balls too easily. Conversely, the slice can be sometimes too deadly (especially when playing against Master CPU).
• the quasi-absence of proper half volleys, making some situations pretty unplayable

Hello,

a few things to consider if you're not already doing them :
- try to send the ball close to the lines, even on normal strikes, so the CPU doesn't have too much time to prepare his strikes ; this should lower his attack rate, and gave you more opportunities to attack
- do not stand too far from the baseline else you won't press your opponent enough and you'll be in a passive stance
- step a bit in on shorter balls and take these occasions to attack

Overall, the rally length is significantly shorter in TE4 than in TE2013, to better simulate what's going on in a real court.

I'm planning to look into the drop shot : it often advances too much after the bounce, reducing its efficiency.

I'm also planning to look into the topspin efficiency.

I think half-volleys are alright, but I didn't check in a long time. Many players complained about them in TE2013, but I think they didn't understand how they work in real and in the game, which are relatively close. :blackeye:
In short, don't try to half-volley an acceleration or any decent strike.

And you're welcome & thanks for the praise. :jap:

Hi guys, I have 150 hours in Tennis Elbow 4 and I also think it's more realistic than tennis elbow 2013. I think the CPU aggressiveness problem is due to very unbalanced player statistics and statistics. nonsense, for example Davidovich Fokina in game 1 service maximum speed of 160 km/h when in real life in 2022 he has reached a service of 252 km/h. I think that in Tennis Elbow 4 the statistics of the 30-50 ATP ranking players have more than 90 on average in many of their skills so when you face players of 200 ATP ranking there is a lot of difference in hitting power, that in real life doesn't happen unless we play against a 13-year-old boy. I myself am not a tennis player if I hit with a racket it is possible that I will have a service at some point of more than 200 km/h even though the ball will surely go out of court, I don't think a real life 500 ranked tennis player would hit the ball much slower than a 10 ranked tennis player for example. I believe that all players should have a balance in the statistics of hitting power below 80 and in turn differences in effectiveness, aim, etc, there should be a 500 ranking player from a 10 ranking player.
It is from my point of view and opinion
PD: the game is fantastic :applause:

zappingol,
1) the low-rank players are less strong than in real life on purpose : it's to ease the learning of the game for the new users.
You can change that by raising LowNorm from here : viewtopic.php?p=280177#p280177 . (although it'll change the Junior players as well)
The Top 100 should be relatively close to the real deal, though.

2) I just greatly raised Fokina's serve power for the next update (there are only a few players with realistic skills, and none are recent)

3) It's very unlikely you'll ever hit a 200km/h without years & years of professional training, except if you're a very naturally gifted sportsman, and with years of training the result isn't guaranteed. My fastest service speed ever was likely a bit shy of 170km/h (although I'm not a naturally gifted sportsman ':D ), which was much above the average tennis club player. Most of 0 players & better I watched in tournaments (it's like the top 1000 in France) had a relatively slow 1st serve, around 145~160km/h.

PS: thanks ! :jap:
