Forehand Preference for the CPU ?

Postby Andynator7 » 31 May 2022, 17:49

Hi Manu,

Congrats on the great recent updates! The game has come so far and feels more complete than ever.

I posted a while ago about adding a skill or talent that helps with footwork or even running around the backhand specifically. Thinking about it more, I was wondering if you would consider adding a simple "Run Around Backhand" or "Forehand Preference" skill bar for computer players. When playing against players like Federer or Dimitrov in the World Tour, it feels like they will hit many more backhands than those players would in real life. They would take nearly every chance they have to run around and hit a forehand.

Am I remembering right that there is an option for forehand preference in TEM2? If that does exist, maybe it would not be so hard to add the same thing as a skill bar (like the way top spin works) for computer players in TE4. I feel like this would make a lot of players more realistic and would add a lot of diversity in the strategy of different players without adding any new play styles.

I'm curious to hear what you think. Thanks!

Ah ok, that makes sense. Are the strategies of the top players in the TE4 world tour customized at the moment or are they all set to the default? Are you interested in help customizing them for each player if you haven't yet?

No, there's 0 custom strategy right now. If you want to create some, I'll gladly put them in the player base ; just be sure to test them a bit 1st. :yes:

Hi Manu,

I've made and tested a few of these. Should I just post them here or get them to you another way?

Thanks!

You can post them here, it's fine and maybe it'll encourage some other people to test them out or create their own..! :yes:

Here are the first of the strategies I've been working on. I've tested these extensively and have a few other top ten players that I am still testing right now. I tested them using different match-ups and surfaces to take the average of each player's style as best as possible. I also included the player style I was using for that player because I can imagine that would change how these work quite a bit.
Code: Select all
Federer (All-Rounder)
Strategy      =   F 100 -25 45 20 -15 0 30 -15 15 0 -10 30 20 30 80 10 10 P 100 -25 45 20 -15 0 30 -20 -10 0 0 0 30 30 80 10 10

Nadal (Bulldog)
Strategy      =   F 100 20 20 5 -40 -5 35 20 15 -25 -10 5 20 35 10 10 0 P 100 20 20 5 -40 -5 35 20 -5 -5 -15 -10 25 35 10 10 0

Djokovic (Counterpuncher)
Strategy      =   F 100 -10 10 -10 -15 -5 0 -15 20 5 -5 -15 -10 10 -5 30 0 P 100 -10 10 -10 -15 -5 0 -10 10 0 0 -10 10 10 -5 30 0

Thiem (Aggressive Baseliner)
Strategy      =   F 100 10 50 10 -15 5 35 15 20 -10 -5 5 30 55 40 20 0 P 100 10 50 10 -15 5 35 15 -5 0 0 0 25 55 40 20 0

Also, I simulated many 5-set matches while doing this testing and I think that the estimated match time is a bit low. On hard courts, 5-set matches were estimated to only be about 3-3.5 hours, even if all the sets were 6/4 or 7/5. It seems like that kind of match would be 4 hours or even over 5.

I hope these can be useful! :D

Thanks !

I still didn't have the time to give them a quick check, so I didn't put them in yesterday's update, but they'll likely be in the next one..! :yes:

Sorry for the long delay to get back to you (my whole family got the COVID 2 weeks ago :sweat: ).

So I finally could check your strategies in details ; they seem fine except for the FH preference. There it's likely more an issue with the engine because even at 30% the player starts to run weirdly to play FH instead of BH. So I had to lower each by 10%. (I might look into that AI behavior at some point)

They'll be in the next update, thanks again ! :)

Hello. I know this is a bit late but I'd like to create some custom strategies for myself. How did you create these? I don't understand what the numbers mean

I saw that, but I can't see the coaching strategy in the CPU vs CPU matches. I don't know how to bring it up

It's the interface on the left with all the white bars :

You need to move the mouse to see it.
