How does it work?

Postby athan_k » 24 May 2007, 19:39

Hi,

I am not sure how this works....Is it based on an honour approach of some sort? For example, if I report that I'd won a game against Dario, a three set match of 4/6, 6/4, 4/6, what is there to prevent him from reporting that he actually won the game and not me?

I am only asking this question to get clear on how the ladder works. I am sure that Dario or any other player in the ladder, including myself, would not do something as pathetic as that, but I am still curious....

also, since I just signed up and I just finished my first game with Dario who alerted me to the ladder system and told me to sign up, I am not sure how to report my ranking - i do not know what my rank is....

Hi Athan,

To join the ladder, simply beat someone who is already on the ladder, and you will get a ranking. Before you beat someone, you have no ranking.

And yes, everything is based on the honor system, and so far nobodyh had reported false results. The only cheating that has happened has been players using the CPU, but now that has been disabled anyway.

ladder v.2 perhaps?

Postby athan_k » 24 May 2007, 22:33

Thanks for clearing up these questions for me. I have some suggestions:

1. Create the option to host a 'ladder game' that would be already set (forced) to three sets - this way you would not have to worry about the 1 set matches....also, the ladder game will be 'tracked' and the result would automatically be integrated into the ladder standings.

2. Figure out a way to get around the honor system - for those who are on the ladder, they would be 'tracked' somehow and everytime they play a game that is classified as a 'ladder' game - see 1 above - the final score would be used to determine standings....

PS. I am sure you've probably already thought of these issues...if so, then here's one player's wishes to expand the boundaries of this wonderful software and game!

Hi,
These are very good ideas, however I do not run the technical aspect of the game. You should contact manutoo about these suggestions; I think they are very good ones.

Hello athan_k,

I deleted your message in the "Tennis Elbow" forum and I'm answering you here coz it's a lot more tidy... ;)

Right now, if there's an important contestation, I can still look the logs to know what matches have been played.
But as there's no online account handling (you can change ur name whenever you want), the possible checkings are limited.

And for this precise reason, the lack of online account, it won't be easy to do any online ranking system, coz the 1st step would be to create an online account system, and force people to create their account when they want to play online ; and it would mean more work than I can do for now, and moreover, it would probably deter a few players to play online.

So for now, we'll have to stick with the ladder in this forum, and with the ELO score.

Thanks for your reply, as always fast and informative :D Another related idea: why not do a poll to find out about whether more people would like this idea.

I guess, for me, the main attractiveness of this wonderful game/simulation software is its online feature - and by the way, although right now I am using the demo version, I will be buying the game as soon as I return from vacation - so, I am thinking of the different ways in which you can expand the online side of the game.

I think that given a robust, complex, intuitive, user-friendly, well-balanced online aspect, there will be many more players who will be using this game.

Sorry to go off topic (I think that my post will be better placed in the online games forum) but both aspects (online and ladder) are intimately related....

Hello,

yup, I'm pretty sure more people who'd like to have an advanced automated ranking system. I'll try to do it someday, but as only a minority of players is playing online, I cannot put it on my top priority list. (most people are playing only the "World Tour")

But I always try to enhance the online mode little touches after little touches.

PS: u're not off-topic, it's ok ;)

Hey! I got the online ranking on the forum under control ! I think what athan_k suggests is that there is a seperate log for ladder matches so that you manutoo or I can view which matches actually took place. However for the moment there has been no lying so this isn't even a real problem yet.

Really it doesn't matter as long as both players agree. However, if one player disagrees it should be played in fair mode.

Hello,

if you lost your key, just send me a message from here :
https://www.managames.com/mail_en
telling me your email address, and the approximate date of the order.
If your cousin registered with his email address then give me his email, and I'll send the key again to him.

Anyway, if you already paid for your key, you don't have to pay again.

Standings seriously outdated?

Postby Guest » 18 Jul 2007, 21:50

Most of these players are inactive or semi-retired, shall we say. Shouldn't the ranking system reflect that? Or maybe we could create another "Race to the Top" chart?

Those who do not play much will eventually slip down in the ranks because of inactivity and the fact that others will get more wins.

I was thinking of having some sort of "Race" for the month maybe. Does anyone else think this is a good idea?
