I feel that TE4 gameplay is too fast

Postby Brad1981 » 06 Jan 2024, 06:41

I wanted to add to this. I feel that TE4 gameplay is too fast. Sometimes I try to do a comparison by playing the game while watching on tv, and the game is always faster. I used to think that all the court bounces were too fast, but realized a few months ago, it is really only the acceleration shot that is too fast. All other strikes are similar to when I watch on tv, but the acceleration strike is much too fast in the game, compared to faster shots in real life. I wish you could consider making just this shot slower somehow. I know it has different speeds depending on preparation time, and at the lower end, it is relatively ok. So my suggestion maybe is to cap/reduce the speed at the higher end. Maybe by 5-10%. I'm not sure exactly the ratio. But that would be a good starting point I think.

Its tennis game and in my opinon acceleration shots cant be too slow bc players couldnt finish the point like in real, rallies could be too long.

Exact. Above all, don't reduce the speed of acceleration, otherwise we'll have the same problem as in te2013, i.e. endless rallies.

Brad1981,
IIRC, you're playing in Arcade mode, no ? (the 2nd point here hints to it => viewtopic.php?f=15&t=35053&p=288997&hilit=arcade#p288972 )
In Arcade mode, you're going to do more of the faster accelerations, as the position penalty is lower. Although, it shouldn't alter the CPU behavior.

Anyway, as exposed in the 2 posts above, I have to find a correct balance between attack & defense, and it seems that right now, we're not too bad (except on clay with top players  ).

Did you try to play in Elite mode ? It should lower a bit the average ball speed.

Yes, I'm playing mostly Arcade mode because I like the longer rallies with fewer stoppages due to errors. For me, it has a more natural feel to it. Like how in real life, muscle memory from many years of experience allows you to play more freely with fewer "dumb" errors.
I just wanted to add. For the past few months, I have been playing the Blue-Green US Open court. I am now playing the Australian Open court, and the speed of the acceleration shot is not nearly as bad. So I think for the most part the acceleration shot is good, except for on extremely fast courts (US Open, indoor). I would like to revise my suggestion and maybe just make a slight adjustment to the max speed of the acceleration shot ONLY on the lower-bouncing courts of the US Open and indoor.

Manu, I also agree that the game's pacing is too fast and I think the average acceleration speed needs to be lowered. The issue is that it's simply too easy to make deep acceleration shots, even while playing on Elite, so the game sometimes feels like Ping-Pong. In the past I have tried to improve this by maximizing the Coefficient of Friction, but even at 0.99 it's not enough. Alternatively, instead of directly decreasing the average acceleration speed, you could make it so that it just requires better timing and positioning to make the same acceleration shots that are normal now, and significantly increase the error penalty for doing accelerations without good positioning and timing.

To compensate for this reduction you could also decrease the player speed so as to not have rallies that are too long.

If you do not plan to make these changes, would you consider showing us how we could mod that?

abc010101,
people usually think the players are kinda slow.

What difficulty level are you playing against ?

You could try to tune the Elite parameters => viewtopic.php?p=287228#p287228 .

I am tuning the Elite values like you said but for some reason it makes no difference no matter what values I put, the precision and ball difficulty stay the same even if I put extreme values.

I have DevMode enabled and I don't have any mods installed

abc010101,
as explained in the linked post, you have to set your player control to Simulation and back to Elite to apply the changes.

So you mean when I start a match I set it to Simulation, and then I pause, go to "Help" and change back to Elite ? That's what I've been doing but to no avail

abc010101,
do it in the Character Sheet before starting a match.
If you have Modded the game by copying over an old Modding SDK, it may not work though. Or if you have a profile and changed Tennis.ini instead of your Profile .ini .

Thanks Manu! That worked. Now I'm a little confused as to what the values do, though. So the "precision" values affect the size of the green circle used for aiming, but then what does DiffX do ?

abc010101,
DiffX scales the ball difficulty ; so if you're perfectly positioned up/down, it doesn't change anything, but imperfect positioning is more archly punished (eg: when you're in the orange part of the Danger Zone).

Ok thanks. I have been tweaking these but I found an issue, after changing both values to make the controls slightly more difficult, I find that the CPU, when facing a somewhat short safestrike from me, will move forward too much in an attempt to catch the ball at the rise, but will constantly fail, resulting in the CPU hitting a safestrike, and moving back to the baseline almost every time this happens. This happens even at Incredible 10. Do you have any suggestions ? Is there a way to communicate to the CPU that it needs to move forward less frequently and stay back more ?

I tried to tune the surfacespeed value and it doesn't seem to change anything

abc010101,
send me a Bug Report the next time it happens and I'll try to have a look. (HowTo => topic5-31732.php )
