New Idea: Chat option available just before starting a game

Postby athan_k » 31 May 2007, 23:15

Hi all,

Here is an idea: it would be nice if once I click on a player's name to join a game (in this example, I am not hosting, I am joining a game), there would be a button somewhere just before we get 'transported' to the court with the chat option available. Why? Case in point. Say I want to play someone but without using acceleration (without using b1 + B2) but only using b1 and b2 on their own for a more 'realistic' (means more rallies) game on the court. But I can't let the other player know about my wish (and also to see if he/she is willing to go along) until we are in the game and then it's not fair to ask that since the game has already started.

I am saying this because I just finished a game with player Goran and the first game we played was fast and furious with all the accelaration (b1 + b2) we could muster. We chated and I proposed the idea of playing another game with only using b1 and b2 but without using acceleration (power shorts). He agreed and then we played an awesome, fun set with rallies of no less than 10-15 shots before a point was won!

Based on our game then I thought, it would be nice if I could have chatted with him before starting a game....

anyway, it's an idea that I would certainly love to see implemented...if anyone else thinks so, please let me know

Hello,

I note down the idea, but even if it'd be cool to have it, it's not a priority right now, coz it's still possible to open the chat window just when the game begins, or at least, at the end of the 1st point...

PS: and I surely note down the fact that the game was funnier without the acceleration, it comforts my idea that I should lower its usage for TE2007..! ;)

Oh well, too bad that it is not a priority but I completely understand as you must be very busy with development of te2007 and trying to keep everyone happy! :)

I am very happy that you also seem to think that lowering the importance of the acceleration feature is a good thing!

Here's an idea for modeling the game based on real world data: compute the average of length of rallies (number of shots back and forth) played by the pros before a point is won (I am not sure if the average or median would be the better stat, but these stats may be computed per point or game or set, etc).

Now, compare that stat (or stats) with the average or median length of rallies in te2006 (between online players) and I am willing to bet that when acceleration is used, the length of rallies are much shorter than the real world.

I, for one, find it very exciting to be able to rally and work hard for each point ... which reminds me .... what's with the serve heavy element of the game? With the current values one can win entire games or sets by serving hard enough .... I can't see that being the case in pro tennis.

Serve is not a problem, why are always some beginners think that they know everything :?:

No, serve is not a problem! Like I said before, there are players that can return every kind of serve, why? cause they know how to move, key in returning services is practice

@ athan_k:

I think it's not needed to do so precise stats to see that the acceleration is too powerful like it is right now... ;)
But if you take the time to do some stats, I'll be curious to know the exact results !

And it's true that the service is a bit too hard to return (mainly coz of the lag), but it's not impossible.
Although, I think I'll lower a bit its precision or something like that for TE2007, coz not everybody is as skilled as Blacky and other best TE players..! ;)

The acceleration is absolutely not too powerful...no one ever hits a winner with it against me, and neither do I...against good players!
It's players like athank who haven't practiced enough that think it's too powerful...just because they aren't that good doesn't mean you have to make the game different...
But the serve is still too powerful, no way around it.

I think acceleration is fine the way it is. In fact, it would be cool if there was an even faster all-or-nothing kind of shot (limited usage--maybe 1-2 strikes per point), like how some pros just let go and rip with all their power.
The clay court already takes away the effectiveness of acceleration shots, so if someone has trouble with these kinds of shots, perhaps a clay court is best to play on all the time?

The serve can be powerful, yes, but that's how it should be. It should be powerful.

But the accuracy of the 1st serve, or even the second, for that matter, is beyond something that's real. At the end of the match the percentage of 'the first serve in' is usually about 95-100% (!?) for both of the players.

There has to be more balls in the net, or wide. Indeed right now, the game's basically about players guessing the direction of the serve and knowing that it will most definitely be 'in'. Therefore, a seldom good rally points are played, which is pity, really. That's what tennis is mostly about.

I like the all-or-nothing shot idea...I have a little suggestion...You would have a new button for this shot, and the longer you hold the button down, the more power you get. But there's a trick: the longer you hold the button down, the more sensitive the direction buttons, left and right, become. So if you want a really powerful shot that goes in, you can only hold the left or right button down for extremely little time. This way, hitting a very powerful shot that is effective takes some skill, since it would be quite hard to aim it accurately.

Of course, I have no idea how this would work in practice, but I think it might.

Maybe for TE 2007. :D
