A Case of Serious Dishonesty

Postby Guest » 28 Apr 2007, 07:56

Hi folks!

It's been a month since I started playing this game and I may have met some of you in online matches. I'm sorry I had to bring up such a disgraceful issue in my first post here; however, I feel it is my responsibility to alert players about potential fraud in online games which not only defeats the purpose of the competition, but also corrupts the athletic spirit (if there is one in virtual sports).

I was playing someone last night and she seemed to be in superb form throughout the first set. She messaged me before the game started, saying she was currently ranked #2 on the "ladder", for which I congratulated her. She seemed full of self-confidence and even replayed one of her killer shots that she was especially satisfied with. Everything was cool until I decided to move around a bit in an attempt to find a better position to serve. And to my surprise, she started moving accordingly, like the CPU mode would. It was so mechanical that no matter how many times I did it, she would follow suit. So I paused the game and demanded an explanation. To make the admission easier for her, I said it was nothing serious and it wouldn't make myself morally superior. After all, everyone makes mistakes, no matter how "perfect" they are. She never replied, nor did she retire. Yet when I tried resuming the game almost half an hour later, guess what? She was alive and running again! So I stopped the game and gave her a second chance now that I have more solid proof that she was "not herself". Again, no reply whatsoever. That's when I started composing this message. Last time I checked, connection was lost after 45 minutes of inaction.

It's interesting how inconspicuous details can sometimes lead to surprising discoveries. Such behaviour should not be tolerated, and this player should be disqualified and removed from the ladder immediately, to reinforce fair competition. In case anyone needs further evidence, I also made a screenshot of the conversation. I hope this issue will get resolved as soon as possible.

I wish everyone success in their games (although it is not quite possible :P)

I told her that if only she'd stop moving in the exact same direction (like an mirror image) as I moved around picking a spot for service, then I would believe that she was playing manually. Sure enough she couldn't "control" her movement :(

If you have any problems with the ladder, please send me a PM informing me of the issue.

Hello,

I just checked and it is actually possible to set our player control to CPU. I'll change this for the next build..!

Why? Can't people just be honest and not play as a CPU? Its kind of obvious when you are playing against a CPU anyway. If they get everything back, never miss, and are prefect in everything then obivously they are a CPU. I really hope you don't disable this option because I often play doubles with my friend using the CPUs because we don't have 4 players. Please don't disable it because of that! It is obvious if a CPU is playing! So please just retire if you are playing a CPU, and people just don't do it!

Hello,

don't worry, I'll just force the human control on 1st player of each team, but not on the 2nd one ! ;)

Hi,
I don't think it is necessary to make Player 1 automatically as human. It is easy to realize if it is CPU just by moving the player before the serve. The CPU moves in relation to your movement.
Also, for me personally, I sometimes like to play on the other side of the court and make Player 1 as CPU and Player 2 as human so I can start a match on the other end, without having to press the F2 button.
I think it's fine the way it is.

Having read all the threads in this topic, first of all I want to say that I completely agree with manutoo that you should disable CPU playing for online games (at least for the first player) and second, can you please tell me which build will implement this? And speaking of builds, how can I check in the program to see what build it is?

Hello athan_k,

it should be working in the current build ! ;)

If you can play online, it means you have the latest build.
You can also check it by clicking on "Check for new version" in the "Misc Options" menu, when the "Advanced options" are "on".

Hello,

I just discovered today that when a disconnection was happening during the loading of the game, then the game was reversing to normal mode, thus letting you play against a CPU player.

Maybe it was this that happened to the OP ( = original poster of this topic).

Since a few weeks it's impossible to give CPU control to your player, but due to this disconnection problem, you could still be playing a normal offline game.
I already corrected this and I updated the version on the website, but it's not announced (it's not an important update, so no new build number :) ).
Now, if a disconnection appears during the loading, then the message "connection lost" should appear when the game starts, and you'll have to manually leave the game.

Ive noticd this "new" player 1 killing all the so called masters lately. Tonight I decided.....well.......lose and learn from this wonder. Guess what......this player1 moved in a mechanical........it was so obvious way. Even when I moved to serve they would move in a mirror image. Even on some of my best serves.........they were right there as if they read my mind. I clicked out and retired.........

Humm, strange, I just checked again, and either the host or the client are in CPU mode, they are reverted to human mode on loading... I hope there's not an exploit somewhere...
