Mana Games

So I was playing a master and I wasn't doing pretty well. Anyway, at around the end of the 10:30 timer, prob around 3:00, I clicked Esc and went to check my school email. I come back on the game around 20 seconds later and when I see the master gave up. He also said I was a loser and 'LOL!' but I've seen enough retards on this game so that I didn't care about that. What really pissed me off is I got an elo penalty -27 which is really stupid considering I did nothing wrong.

Can somebody explain me how this game works?

going away while playing and make your opponent wait = bad.
Wait the end of the match to go to check your email = good.
