Ping level

Postby kraavitz » 07 Jan 2007, 15:59

Hi, I am not sure where I should be changing my ping settings. I am tyring to play an online game, however have a ping above the max 250. Have checked my router and cannot find any relevant settings / fields for modifying pings.

Unable to participate in any online game as I don't know how or where to modify my ping.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks..

Hello,

the ping is not something you can set.
The ping is the time needed for an Internet packet to go from your computer to another computer, and come back to yours.

So to have a ping under 250ms, the most easy way is to play with people in the same region of the world than you. IE: Europe, if you live in Europe, South America if you're located there, etc..

But you still can do a few things to improve your ping :
- 1st, check you don't have any virus, trojan or malware that uses your PC to send thousand of emails per hour ( free antivirus : http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html ; and free anti-spyware : http://www.spybot.info )
- turn off any download and upload program that may be running (www, ftp, P2P, etc...)
- if you play through Wifi, try to switch to LAN by using a line between your PC and your router
- when you host, be sure to have the Delay set to Auto

I just checked your IP, it seems you're from Australia, so you may want to contact the guys here :

Thank you very much Emmanuel. I will review the link and hope that I can at least get a game locally. I had nothing excessive running on my machine that caused the ping times to be quite high...crossing my fingers. Regards, Len.

one more thing, it was so obvious that I forgot to say it at 1st time : you need a fast connection to get a low ping.
If you have a RTC connection (with a 56kps modem), your ping can't be under 150ms. If you have 512k adsl or better, it can be down to 30ms with people living near you.
