Reputation : how does it work ?

Postby ProdigyXP » 24 Apr 2015, 19:30

How does the reputation work in this game? For the life of me, I cannot understand why I have lost reputation in the game. I have never been anything but polite with everyone I play (can't say the same for some people I have played against). Yet I was early on in good reputation, only to eventually be put back to neutral ever since. I continue to see others with good reputation (typically the people I try to play). Is there something I am missing? I was giving some weight to the stat (tried to avoid bad rep players), but now I wonder if there is really much to it. Not the end of the world by any means, just would like to better understand it. :)

Hello,

if you're unlucky, you beat a serie of sore losers who give bad rep on each defeat.
Else, you may have a style of play that a bunch of people dislike (example: you serve from corners). Or your connection isn't too good, etc...

I suspect I was unlucky with sore winners. I love the game, but I must say I feel as though there is quite an unfriendly bunch. For some reason I suspected a game with a smaller niche (community) would be friendlier than what I have experienced. That certainly is not a reflection on your game or anything you have done. I just had a match the other day that was the closet game I have played so far. I loved it and assumed the other player did as well. A couple of my hits ended up lobbing my shot by accident (due to accidently moving the left stick slightly down when trying to push it left). This caused the lob and the other player mis-timed their swing each time and missed the return, giving me the point. We were at something like 7-8 on the tie break and they stopped the game long enough to type "you are a cheater".

Anyway, I had another "issue" with reputation last night. I was at neutral since some knucklehead(s) voted me down from Good. I bought a copy of the game for a friend of mine. We tried out the cooperative doubles mode. We played a match and my reputation went to Bad. He definitely didn't vote me down (he didn't even know how to). The only thing odd that happened is he had connected to my game once and it booted him out on his end, but on my end he was showing still connected, but I couldn't do anything but end the match. We connected again and played a little and then he had to go AFK for a couple minutes. I paused it and waited. I accidently unpaused it and couldn't get it to pause again. He came back in a bit and we finished the match. Really frustrating to be tagged as a Bad reputation and be potentially avoided by some (I try to avoid them as well). I can accept that some people are just jerks, but in this case I know my friend didn't do anything to give me bad rep, yet it changed between the start of my game and after with nobody else being able to do it. Maybe something in the game effects this as well (like the long pause and/or connection issue?).

I checked and the person you did a coop doubles with gave you bad reputation ; I guess it was by mistake, maybe he didn't understand what the button did, but he did it.

I also checked the previous 2 neg votes against you, and both players had good rep and didn't give bad rep much, so you very likely do something that annoys other players ; if you're not sure what it is, I think the best is to ask at the end of the match against several opponents, so you'll know what's wrong.
1 possibility is that you don't do a sorry gesture when you win a point after a ball clips the net.

Thank you for looking into this. I will certainly let my friend know your findings. I’m not sure how one could accidently give bad reputation, so I am quite annoyed to say the least. He swore that he wasn’t messing around. Not the best way to thank someone for buying you a game and playing it with you.

As for the other two people who have given me bad rep being ‘good’ players, I guess that is more to my point about the community. If someone gives you bad rep (per your example…which I know is a guess) because you don’t make a gesture to apologize for hitting the net, they are not the players I would want to play with and certainly don’t help build the community. Especially when they can see the player in question is new and has about 50 +/- games played. As a side note, I didn’t even realize you could do an apology gesture…I missed that one. Oddly, I have never seen anyone else use it. I don’t do happy gestures when I win a point, I do the applaud opponent when losing a point instead, etc. I have never been ANYTHING but polite with people. I always say “Nice job :-)" at the end of matches when I can. Those are the times that I can even say ANYTHING, because the vast majority of players disconnect immediately after a match without saying a word. They also do not respond to a “Hi” or “Hello” at the start. I began to learn that some say “Good Game” at the start of a match, so I began to as well. Funny thing is, I would normally say good game AFTER I play someone in a game, not before… so with the mentality of some players, I should probably give those players bad rep for poor etiquette. ;-) Heck, I even spent a good half hour after a match helping a player I never met before learn how to port forward his router so he could host his own games.

What makes it more ironic to me, is the fact that I see poor etiquette routinely by others. Such as sitting in menus for long lengths of time (which I never do. If someone messages me on steam for example, they will have to wait). They also can access the menus MANY times at shorter intervals. I still don't get that one. They connect with a good ping, and then apparently start some type of downloading, as the ping can fluctuate from 90ms to 900ms etc. They intentionally hit the ball way outside the lines for several shots and run around in circles when you are trying to serve, etc. I have certainly witness VERY suspect "lag" only when I am serving as well as getting a desync restart after winning a point. I have not once uttered a single word to any of those things, no exaggeration.

I know none of this is your problem or fault. I am also not trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill. I also know you don’t know me or my personality. Just consider it feedback from an honest adult customer who enjoyed playing your game a lot, and wants to express their frustration from the new player perspective. Again, I appreciate the time you took to look into this for me.

Since I put the reputation system in place, it seems people behave a bit better than before, but some people never change and as in most Internet places, there are a bunch of people who think they can do whatever they want...

Anyway, if you figure out why you got some bad votes, let me know.

1. Say "Good game" before the match
2. Apologize for net cords and mishits
3. Serve from default position of closer to the middle
4. Don't lob when the opponent is on the baseline
5. Don't use excessive drop shots
6. Don't use excessive short slices
7. Don't over do fist pumps (or any gestures)
8. Don't switch to "Another application" during match
9. Don't open chat mid match (wait till its over)
10. Don't over use preset chat quotes
11. Say "Good game" after the match

I have 100% positive feedback doing just that. :)

Your reputation don't depend only on you and how you behave in the match , it depends also on the players you play with , if you are too good for them and you're even acting politely during the match, I don't think you would get a good reputation .
