could potential evolve with time?

Postby Brecht » 27 Jan 2010, 17:38

Hi all, I've just played the AO 1998 at incredible level, and one of my players, Myskina, 16 of age, ranked 30 in my game and whose rankperyear is 293 in the Players.WTA.ini, made it to the final, hardly losing it to Mary Pierce 10/12 in the third  .
While, on a side note, my main player who has been #1 for a while still didn't manage to win her first slam and lost in R4. But that's not the problem.

If I understand well the way the game functions, the "rankperyear" determines the current stats of the player we don't coach, but not his/her potential. Once we decide to coach him/her and start the training, the stats will improve, in some proportion with the potential (the player will improve quicker in the game departments where he/she's got high potential and slowlier in the others), but in no relation with the "rankperyear". Am I correct?

If so, it means that the coach's only job is to make the player fulfill his/her potential much earlier than expected, and that's all. I wish it were a little more difficult than this

Brecht, u got it right. Though, i'm not sure how it'll go to change the potential over the time, that would make the training kinda random & confusing... ie: it'll go better or more bad without being the consequences of the coach actions...

Hi Manu, I got your point. But I can imagine something like what's already happening when you train a skill that is really low: you can make the player improve that skill but less effectively than others, and if you don't train it intensively you will see it go down pretty quickly. Training shouldn't be random, for sure. Another way of making the player improve less in the early stage of his/her career would be A. to introduce a limitation in training efficiency (through a limited form maybe, like for elder players: young players couldn't train more than 4 hours a day without risking injuries or bad form) and B. to introduce some kind of "Capriati rule": less tournaments for players under 16 and 18 (I'm not so sure about the age and nrs of tournaments): this point wouldn't affect directly the training, but since training is actually more tiring than matches    , training too would be reduced.
