On your player update: I'd like to get this game even more difficult.
About confidence: I never train it either, but it is a good indication of the mental state of the player. I always keep an eye on it, like on motivation, to see if the player needs a break or more training. And (I'm sure you notice it) confidence gets slightly up with each training hour.
I agree with you about the easiness of the mid term of a career. I started to play the game at pro level, but soon realised I'd better play at incredible to be really challenged. I usually have difficulties to start careers (especially of the main players, when its stats are around 5%): it takes months to qualify for a future. But once the machine is on, the ranking and skills improvement is rather unrealistic. On the other end, when the player is in the top ten, some days are hard.
Another way to raise the difficulty of contract players: I noticed that when the coach is being successful, no more unknow players appear on the recruiting sheet; therefore it is quite easy to fulfill the contracts and make a talented champion in spe make the top 100 in half a season. It would be another story with journey(wo)men. Such an opportunity rarely happens ... Nevertheless, I'm just making the experience of coaching a player who shouldn't be playing this season ... I wonder if it's a bug, but I'm enjoying it all the way. I'll tell more about it when the contract ends.
