Opponent helpers displayed :o ?

Postby Elias » 17 Jun 2011, 15:02

Hello,

I just got the demo yesterday, and i can say i really like the game dynamics in this last TE version.

I played offline and online already.

There is something i don't understand about the helpers displayed in online mode when though i disabled
everything. I really don't like the helpers so i disabled everything in my char sheet as you can see it on
this screenshot :

Now when i come to play online, hosting a game (setting up realistic settings & elite controls), i get very often the opponent helpers displayed, not even
mines, mines doesnt appear it's ok, but why the hell should i see my opponent danger zones ? it's pretty annoying :| is there anything i
did not set up properly ?

here is some ss :

Otherwise, i got sometimes some awkward slow downs like the game running in slow motion during rallies, for like 1-2 seconds, happeneing randomly in a game, but usually repeatidly, this littlerally prevents me to play/move when it's happening. It doesnt feel like lag at all, mostly like some big hardware slow down, but this only happens in online mode though. I have a 8800gts and i think my nvidia drivers are pretty recent, so i don't know, maybe should i mess up a bit with my drivers options ?

Thanks for your support, and kudos for this great work Manutoo, your game feels really good right now (i'm coming from some other "dream" game  )

Elias.

Hello,

the idea about the Helpers is that both you & your opponent see exactly the same thing, so you always know if your opponent has his helpers turned on or not.
But for next update, I'll give the options to turn that off (likely through a setting in the .ini ).

During the slowdowns, did you notice the Turtle icon on top left of your screen ? If so, it means your PC was waiting for network packet from your opponent's PC. It can happen either in case of network congestion (ie: lag), or in case your opponent's PC slowdowns.
If not, then I'm not sure what's going on, as you said it was happening only online...

Ok. i understand this point, but in my opinion it should be enough to have some icon somewhere notifying the opponent is using helpers, not enforcing us sim fanatics
to see those on our screens :) , it helps my opponent probably but disturbs me, i'm really not used to those things :) Though i agree it's nice to have such helpers in
training mode to learn the game, it think there should be an additional mode/setup, sim mode/tourney mode whatever you call it, enforcing no helper/preview at all for both players in online matches.

Yes i think i could see the turtle blinking when having slow downs, it's just it doesnt feel like chunks of lag i'm used to have in other games, doesn't feel the same (ça rend comme de grosses saccades graphiques en fait c'est curieux :p)
Also when the ping is a bit higher than 100ms, even consistently stable the game seems to be running in some slower motion mode, is it a normal behaviour / wanted feature (i mean tied to netcode and how the game deal with latency) ? So far i'm sticking to play 30-100ms games to get a "normal" paced gameplay.

About the Helpers...
TE used to have an online mode called ' tourney' which forced the helpers off, but almost no one was playing (it had other flaws, though :fear: ).

>> it's just it doesnt feel like chunks of lag
>> the game seems to be running in some slower motion mode

it's because the game does micro-pauses in such case...
The game can handle up to 400ms ping, but the problem is that the Delay can't be changed during a match, so if you start the match with a low ping, the Auto-Delay will be low, and if the ping raises during the match, then the Delay won't change and everything will slow down.

PS: just noticed your nickname matches the one in the PM I got on some other site... ;)

Maybe those other flaws prevented people to use it then :) As discussed via pm, i'm pretty sure several people would be glad to have some
separated helper on/off (or alike the one available when playin offline) option in the online game creation process, at least several potential
newcomers i know :p

Yep. I can confirm i don't have any hardware/software issue. I was just not experienced enough to understand how TE handles latency. It's ok now i have a better understanding how to tweak it using the delay option.
