Online Movement Bug

Postby Richou » 05 Mar 2010, 20:50

Manutoo

I know this is just me, and its pissing me off. more and more when i play people online the movement feels like im playing on ice. the annoying thing is the opposing player doesnt always feel it and so just thinks youre moaning.

it takes longer to start moving and longer to stop so i slide into everything. this isnt so much of a problem for pushers but for attackers it makes it impossible to line up a shot and be aggressive. example I played Viktor today, and it was impossible to attack, I was on the laptop and didnt think id stand a chance anyway, but lost 6-4. straight after, i played Adrian Mannarino, and the movement was perfectly fine. any explanation you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Well when I played on my computer, my movement was really good, but now when I am playing on my lap top, my movement is worse, I have a feeling like I am running on ice as well as Richou said... Maybe I just have to adapt to the lap top or I don't know.. :S

Richou, this is very likely due to playing with a Lag of 117ms while u're used to play with low Lag. Check the current Lag set by pressing F4 & looking down right of the screen.

Note: "Lag" will be renamed "Delay" with incoming next update.

The movement is very difficult in this game these days, especially for hard hitters, and especially in 117 ms. It can be just insanely hard. Not that it's a bad thing necessarily, it's just so hard. That's because of the sliding that often happens, it's really a big slide(often happens when returning a serve and then running to the other side of the court), most of the time I just run straight into the ball and press normal or topspin strike not to hit an error. No matter how many times I practice I just can't quite get the timing right on that to hit an acceleration.
Also it's hard because I noticed you have to avoid hitting the down arrow button too much, or you will sort of get stuck. The ideal movement is to just hit left and right buttons at the baseline and avoid down, but it's hard because you gradually go forward towards the net when hitting so it's a must to hit down. You have to do it super quick and only in the right situation. It's feels kind of forced and unnatural to me, regaining position with the down arrow feels natural.

I wouldn't mind if the movement was made a bit simpler and easier, in that there was a bit less sliding happening(this would also make the game less frustrating in lag) and you could move more freely(pressing down a little more wouldn't cause a handicap).

well my connection with most people in europe is somewhere usually between 80 and 120 i think, and for the most part my movement is fine with them, i can set up things easily, even against americans my movement is usually fine, its only recently (last couple of months) that ive started noticing it more frequently.

Actually, for next update, I will noticeably raise the inertia (ie: the sliding) for offline play ; for online play, it'll be raised only when the Lag is under 117ms. The inertia will be also be slightly stronger on clay courts...
One of the reasons I'll do this change is coz I very don't want to see anymore people standing on the middle of the court running to the side to return serves.
Also, it's way closer of reality, even if the stop distance will be still quite lower than in real life, so hopefully I won't get too much complaints about the players being too heavy.
This is a quite important change though, that'll change the balance of a lot of stuff, so I'm pretty sure I'll get a good bunch of moaning... ':D

This may also help to have a bit more consistent online experience when the Lag is different.

Moaning is good. LOL

More sliding sounds scary, but maybe it's a good change.

But I really think it would be a more enjoyable experience to move if there wasn't any inertia effect when doing sort of small movement with your player after hitting(for example pressing down for a second or so to regain better position on court, as I already mentioned). It isn't even realistic that the player sort of gets stuck when you move back a bit after hitting. It sort of mimics the small movement real players do all the time and it should actually improve the movement, not hinder it. Right now the way it works in game promotes just avoiding all little movement and almost standing still waiting for your opponents shot. You should be able to do this small movement and still have full running speed left or right etc. This would really improve moving experience to feel less constrained and more fun. Also I don't mean inertia like moving to one side and then quickly changing to other side should be different, there it's good that you get stuck, but when doing small movement with the keyboard it should feel completely free.

Imo this is a really important issue and the biggest thing that bothers me about the game right now.

I know a way to make very small, subtle movements and to avoid this sliding    , but I am not sure that I want to share it!
I use it quite a bit.

Lol, you might want to think twice about this ;) If you make high return inertia at low "Lag" aces will dominate the game

I don't have a sliding problem when doing small movement, my player just gets stuck. There's no way to prevent it, except avoid small movement as much as possible.

And yeah agree with Stajus, it's very bad if serve gets more effective. It's extremely effective and often with high ping it's just ace ace ace. I'm convinced it's just not humanly possible to return consistently at those speeds, it's always a matter of a bit luck. It's quite realisitic the serve is tough, but could be made slighty less powerful to have more rallies. I think that would be fun.

Well, using it on World Tour isn't gonna do anything :P

P.S. I never notice any "sliding", other than when the lag is high...then you will move into the ball unless you release the arrow a bit earlier, that's all.
