High CPU usage (even when minimized)

Postby CC » 09 Dec 2008, 05:30

I'm not sure that this is a bug -- at least not in the sense of game play. Since probably 4 - 6 revisions (updates) ago, the game takes far more resources than before. The two processes involved are csrss.exe and TennisElbow.exe. The memory usage is surprisingly low, which is great. The CPU utilization, though, changes frequently, and can be quite high, even when the game is minimized and just waiting at a menu. It just seems that TE2009 was much faster many revisions ago. Is there something simple that can be done to improve this? I don't know -- maybe this feedback will at least let you know that there is this issue. I don't know much about programming, but maybe some change was made somewhere that can be adjusted to make the game "lighter?"

Thanks!

Hello,

csrss.exe has nothing to do with TE2009.

There's a little problem with the minimization, but it has always been there... :?
I'll try a lil fix for next update, maybe it'll work better...

I'm sure that csrss.exe is not part of the game, but it is apparently called somehow or somehow involved, maybe just by Windows when TE2009 is open, as its utilization spikes with the game open. I can open IE, Firefox, and other applications simultaneously and csrss.exe has very minimal utilization (as long as the game is closed). This started happening several releases ago. A brief search for information from Microsoft on similar issues (csrss.exe site:microsoft.com) yielded many results -- some involving Terminal Services, some involving cmd.exe processes, some involving third party applications. Maybe there is something there that would help? You can open Task Manager and sort the data by the CPU field. You will see the swapping back and forth from TE2009 to csrss.exe. Even if nothing changes, it would probably be OK. I am not using my older computer right now for the game, and besides, it has Windows 98 SE installed. But I have been playing TE2009 on two XP computers for many months now.

Thanks, Manutoo.

This is not as clear as it seemed to me at first. I know that I have seen many times where csrss.exe and tenniselbow.exe swap often for CPU usage, but the test that I just performed did not show this. I opened Task Manager and resized the window to be very small and only show csrss.exe. Then, I opened TE2009 and played a game. This time, the csrss.exe was used a bit more than with the game closed, but it wasn't very bad. I will keep testing this, because I am sure that this has been a problem. I am just not sure what is triggering it. I'll post after more testing.

With game window active, CPU utilization of csrss.exe spikes when moving mouse over Task Manager fields. To reproduce this, open game, open Task Manager as shown, click on title bar of game to activate window, and then just move mouse cursor back and forth over field names of Task Manager (Image Name, etc.), but don't click anything:

With game not as active window, CPU utilization of csrss.exe goes down. To reproduce this, just click on the Task Manager border to activate that window, and then move mouse cursor back and forth over field names:

With TE2009 closed and Internet Explorer open, the same test but with Internet Explorer as the active window does not result in csrss.exe having excessive CPU utilization:

That explains what I am experiencing somewhat. Maybe this is not just a problem with my computer. Are other noticing similar issues?

Re: High CPU usage (even when minimized)

Here is an update. With TE2009 open, I opened Internet Explorer. I just had one tab open, and I was just reading about the latest online tournament results. I clicked on the vertical scroll bar in IE to read some more, and I dragged this down a bit. When I did so, it was slow, and I noticed that csrss.exe utilization increased a lot while I was dragging the scroll bar up or down. So, I switched to TE2009 and closed it. Then, I switched back to the IE window and did the same thing. Csrss.exe utilization went to a maximum of 2, but was mostly at 0, with TE2009 closed. I didn't have any other applications open.

This may seem like a tedious update, but it may help. So, I just re-opened TE2009 and repeated the IE scroll test. Utilization of csrss.ese stayed minimal, with TE2009 open. So, maybe there is a leak somewhere, as this is a problem that seems to get worse with increasing time since TE2009 is opened.

Well, this than 5 minutes after my last post, the problem came back. All that I had done is activate the TE2009 window and refresh the online games list a few times. Then, I activated IE to read some more in the forum, and noticed that it was slow when I would drag the vertical scroll bar. Csrss.exe utilization increased a lot.

Hello,

Csrss is meant to do many things, so I guess it's quite possible that everything is normal... ;)
And I surely didn't change anything about system handling since very long time...

You should give a try with another 3D game to see how it goes if u like to do research about it... :)

That's a good idea. Really, TE2009 is the first game that I have played on this computer. It may be a problem with the graphics card or drivers. The performance degradation just surprised me, because before I could have two instances of TE2009 going on my Windows 98 computer, which is much less powerful than the one that I am using now. I will try it again on that computer to find out if maybe I am just having an issue with this new computer and not with the game. TE2009 doesn't seem to allow me to have many programs open with it, whereas I don't think that this was an issue before.

Thanks!

The high CPU utilization is still an issue. Even when minimized, TE2009 is taking between 60 - 75% CPU utilization. It is very frustrating as sometimes I like to check e-mail or browse the forum with the game open, but it takes so long to do this sometimes because the game is taking so many resources away. Can this be improved anymore?

Virus, trojans, hijackers, etc... often mask themselves as csrss.exe. If csrss is located anywhere other than the System32 folder, you're infected.
