Combat explanation

Postby FOTDG » 19 Mar 2023, 16:53

I have watched 4 youtube videos on how to fight/combat - and I am still a bit lost. Having done more research, I have discovered that combat is based on a similar system to the "WoW" games é MMO combat (?) according to the developers blog. I am unfamiliar with that system having never played tactical games of that nature.

I have not turned on any helpers and I am playing the Enhanced version.
Right now, I find that battles do not require any effort. For me, it seems that my characters will win and attack no matter what I do. This is not a good thing for me as a player because it demonstrates that I do not understand the mechanics of the system. I think a tutorial battle level would have been helpful, where the party can fight over and over just to get the hang of it.

Here is what I think I understand :
a1) Each character gets three attacks that you set up pre-emptively (pressing pause). These attacks will occur over and over if you do nothing else but set them up. As I click on the special icons besides the character, it will show a 1, 2 ,3 to show the order of the attacks.
a2) A Kicking attack seems to be an ability that is an addition to the 1, 2, 3 and will happen immediately (parry or block)?

What I don't understand and can articulate :
b1) I have read about the "eyeball" icons and I am not sure I understand what they mean.
b2) Does the 4 dots mean that you are selecting all of the players at the same time? For what purpose? I want each of my party to perform individual actions.
b3) When my character died, they just came back to life again? Is that right? This has happened twice to me and both times my "tank" came back to life. That doesn't seem like much of a challenge if there is no fear of losing the game.

Anyway, I am enjoying the dungeon crawling aspect but I really wish I could understand the fighting. I would love it if the developer or someone would break down the fighting in a video and go over the minutiae of how it works or even a detailed web posting.

If someone has combat expertise, I would love some help - and I know I am late to the game since it was released in 2015.

Hello,

0) You can re-read the tutorial by pressing the L key to show the Dialog Log

a1) No, each queued ability will occur once, then you queue it again if you want to
a2) Yes, because it's flagged as "instant attack, bypass queue" in its description (or something like this, I forgot the exact terms :blackeye: )

b1) It just means that this character doesn't attack anyone
b2) It's convenient to make all characters attack the same target in one right-click (or sword-icon click) ; it's rare to attack different targets with different characters
b3) If all your 4 characters die, then it's game over
