Tennis Elbow 4 - Official Trailer #1

Postby manutoo » 08 Nov 2024, 14:08

Hello,

after more than 30 years of development, the TE series (*) finally got its 1st official trailer ! ':D

I'll likely do a new one if I manage to get motion-captured animations for the movements.

(*) TEM 1 & 2 had a trailer, though. :blackeye:

I'm sorry but the trailer doesn't look right to me
We all know the potential that the game has and many people today are looking for a more "simulation" experience tired of the same games like TS or the nacon sagas.
I think that just showing the bounce of the ball is not enough as there are more aspects of the game and improvements compared to TE3 that could be shown in the trailer.
And of course a big plus would be the new and future animations that would be the “big jump” because many people look at how the players move.

Hey,

For what it's worth, I think the trailer has some promise, especially the nice cuts to different stadiums and the ball bounce scenes were cool. I thought the points shown were not engaging, though, and rather made salient the graphic shortcomings of the game. Perhaps a third-person view (more like the ball bounce one) or else a more distant view would be better, with baseline exchanges, no net touches, and more dynamic editing?

Since the gameplay and the career are the strongest parts of the game, perhaps the text could be more about that. Things like 'Find the right shot and the right tactics for each situation', 'Think and feel like a real tennis player', 'Build your own player from the ground up and lead him/her to the top', 'Face players from all eras of men's and women's professional tennis, or challenge others online'.

Sorry Manutoo, but this trailer looks very old and quite cheap... Not sure that console players will be enthusiastic

I think it's a good start and the ball bounce bit is great but it doesn't really highlight the best bits of TE4. You could start with 'All over the World" but then when you show the courts, say what they are.. "US Open", "Wimbledon" etc and I was expecting some reference to the character sheets and how you can train your player, pick tournaments and work your way up from club level to pro, the way mods allow you to have any pro player etc. I agree with Dimcoe on the suggestions for text. Those make it sound much more engaging.

Perhaps you could show the "very positive" rating score for Steam at the end. I know it doesn't have an overall rating for xbox yet but they are all 4 or 5 stars. You could pick a couple like the big games have a screen at the end with critics reviews or awards they have won. You get the idea.

You need to entice people in in ways that make it seem worth playing when the graphics are not what they are used to.

But I definitely think a trailer is required to help show people what a great game it is.

I think you need some winner(preferably a sliding winner on clay) or a running passing shot at the end.

Gusbaldo & anrox335,
thanks for your feedback.

dimcoe,
personally, I don't like edited rallies in other tennis game trailers : it doesn't allow judging if the rallies are realistic or not. On the other hand, it's not much dynamic to put long, demonstrative rallies in a trailer (coz a trailer should last 1 minute, not 5). So there I picked the middle choice : 3 short rallies, with only 1 one in full. Like this, we get a decent idea of the ball's physics & rally speed.

Your lines are good, but not easy to illustrate, so I'm not sure how impactful they'd get.

Comatorium182,
anyways, TE4 looks "very old and quite cheap", so it's a good match... :blackeye:

"US Open", "Wimbledon", "French Open" are trademarks, I cannot use them.
I cannot show Mods.
Sony doesn't allow reviews from other platforms or non-approved sites.

Hey,

I think the lines would fit with pretty much the same sorts of contents you have now. In any case, they were just suggestions of the sort of thing that I think could work. As it is, the trailer doesn't say much about what makes this game distinctive: someone unfamiliar with the game will think it is just another ordinary arcade tennis game but with bad graphics and will just move along.

A thought about the demonstrative rallies (and perhaps illustrating career mode, tutorial, gameplay, etc): those might go rather in a 'gameplay trailer', rather than a 'look what a cool tennis game, you should check it out trailer'

Game looks great and congrats on the first trailer.

Manatoo, is non local co-op/multiplayer, e.g. doubles possible cross platform (PC, Xbox, and/or PS5)?
