Who has the best Single Handed Backhand?

Postby Richou » 03 Aug 2009, 01:57

Yeah I was bored so, and id been meaning to do this for like 2 hours so here it is.

I would normally pic Gasquet lol but since hes been out of action, i havent seen him recently. So after some thought, I narrowed it down to Wawrinka, Kohlshrieber and Gonzalez (and gasquet).

Wawrinkas backhand is fantastic, especially when i saw him against murray at wimbledon, he can do anything with it
Kohlshrieber, has huge strokes and can generate a tonne of power with it, both his forehand and backhand, although when the ball comes at him he struggles a little.
Gonzalez may seem like a strange choice, but ill explain. Gonzalez has an excellent slice backhand which agitates opponents. also, though he uses his slice a little too much for my liking, he can generate a lot of power off of it. people are generally distracted from his backhand by his ridiculous forehand

I originally narrowed it down to Wawrinka, Haas, Gasquet, and Dudi Sela. I've watched both Haas and Sela in the past week, and both can hit some amazing shots off of that wing. But what sets Tommy Haas apart from the rest is that his slice is the best in the game, and his topspin backhand is right up there with the rest as well. I watched him against Marat Safin on Friday. Whenver the ball came to Haas's forehand, he hit wild shot after wild shot, hitting the ball everywhere but in. But when it came to his backhand, he seemed to make the ball turn to gold, giving Safin fits with his slice and hitting winners into every corner. It was one of the few instances that I've seen in which a player with a good one-handed backhand was far and away the better player over a player with a good two-handed backhand (Safin's 2-hander is no slouch).

Alternative post: Where the heck is Dr. Ivo in here? His one-hander strikes fear wherever he goes!

WTF people??!!

RICHARD GASQUET for sure!! hehe :P

He has the most solid backhand, has a good slice, a good angle, and can hit the boll every time he wants!... like jumping...running... open stance! omg!

And i didn't talk about the power...he can trade the direction of the boll in seconds...and make many winners with that shot..

for me...

RICHARD GASQUET IS THE BEST! :D

While Federer's topspin backhand may not be the BEST in the game, I give the nod to him for a few reasons:
1) He can do just about anything with his topspin backhand (most problems are with Nadal, but so are everyone elses...one handers AND two handers alike...)
2) I think he uses his slice more intelligently than does Haas (though Tommy does possess a superb slice)
3) Federer's backhands have done more to better his career than the other guys, that is, they've helped him get to and stay at the top of the game...
4) When you consider that most of his opponents tend to play to his backhand to avoid his forehand, his backhand has more than stood up to the test (in some ways they may have made it even better)
When playing Fed which poison do you pick...backhand side or suicide? :P

A word about Dr.Ivo striking fear with his one-hander...I hope this was about his slice backhand, because when I went to this year's Legg Mason tourney in Wash. D.C. and watched Ivo in warm-ups, he hit the most beautiful one-hand topspin backhands you ever saw (but ONLY in warm-ups). When the match started, EVERY TIME he tried the topspin backhand it hit the cement BEFORE even reaching the net!! :P

Yeah, I was kidding about Dr. Ivo. Even so, he hit 2 topspin backhand winners against Roddick in that same tournament. :applause:
