Who will win the French Open (WTA)?

Postby Togtdyalttai » 06 May 2009, 21:22

The ATP French Open Is pretty much locked up barring a Nadal injury, but the WTA winner is far from being determined. Who do you think it will be and why?

Probably Serena, defeating 5 Russians along the way that instantly freeze just by the sight of her. Women's tennis.

But, I'll be even more of a pessimist and guess Serena loses to a poor player in the 1st week, thus Kuznetsova wins with her ugly male-like topspin bashing grossness.

Considering Serena has lost her only two matches on clay so far this year, I don't think this is her year. While it's pretty much a guess, I'll take Safina right now. Her form is good, not great, but her mental toughness is much better than Kuznetsova's, who's the only player that seems to be on a tear right now.

Safina had one of her patented "comebacks" 2-5 down in the 3rd against Zheng today. It's weird how she's the opposite of her moronic brother, despite having the same disturbing temper. I don't think she's playing well enough to win... but, it would cool as heck if she won this, and shoved all of Serena's obnoxious "I'm the real #1." comments in her face.

Yea, those comments from Serena seemed unlike her usual personality to me. But one thing's almost certain: Serena isn't #1 on clay.

Maybe so, but she has a RG title. The only other current player with that is Ivanovic. It's hard to believe that was only one year ago.

I think that Serena showed really bad judgment with her "real #1" comments...

She was most likely indirectly lashing out at the WTA for the way that they determine #1, what with her winning the Aussie, finaling at Wimby, and winning the US Open, yet these "pretenders seem to "default" to #1 with NO slam victories...

Still, some things are best left unsaid, or else they should be addressed in the appropriate WTA forum....so that she doesn't come off sounding bitter and petty...

I don't understand Serena's sudden change about being #1. Before, the Williams' seemed content that they didn't play enough, so they couldn't get #1. It also helped that there were great players like Justine, Kim, etc...

Now, Serena obviously doesn't give a crap about any non-slam tournaments outside of Miami. It's the WTA "TOUR", Ree. There's more than 5 tournaments that count. They've already catered to you enough by lowering to best 17, raising Slam points, and neutering all Tier III (International, whatever they are now) events.

It seems that after Serena thrashed Her Royal Shriekness at the Aussie a couple of years ago after being big and fat to boot, she had a wake-up call of sorts...

Perhaps she sensed SOMEWHAT her tennis mortality; if she could win against the best while in horrible shape, what if she got in better shape?
Could she once again be perched at the top of the WTA rankings?

Also, we have to consider her indomitable will and fighting spirit; she, more than any other woman (or man, for that matter, in ANY sport) possessed/possesses the ability to miraculously rise to the big occasion despite her lack of fitness...

Add to that the fact that within the last year she was able to win 2 slams and get to the final of another, only to narrowly lose to Venus (who also only seems to RISE at Wimbledon 8-) ) and you have a scenario where she probably feels that this should validate her return to #1, even if she only seems to flirt with that position...

Granted, for one reason or the other, (indifference or injury) both Williams' never really seemed overly concerned with STAYING #1 for the long term...

Perhaps either (or BOTH) could have been considered in any argument for the GOAT title, certainly a few years ago it was thought, I dare say EXPECTED of them...but with their many outside interests and inability to stay injury-free (as alluded to earlier in this post, Serena's style and approach to the game virtually INSURES that she can't play more than a couple of tourneys in a row) ONLY hoping to "peak" at 3 of the 4 slams (guess which one I left out  )

My personal feeling is that back in the day when they were considered, along with Lindsay, the biggest proponents of "big babe" tennis, that if they learned and utilized ALL aspects of the game (taking advantage of their HUGE strokes and ending the points sooner at the net) instead of running around, beating themselves to death in these interminable rallies, they may not have incurred so many injuries over the years...

Let's face it, Serena ain't exactly GRACEFUL out there, she sure as hell don't "float" effortlessly, more like you can feel the ground shake when she's plodding around (once again, she's driven by that damn WILL of hers)

But time inevitably moves on and the same power game that the Williams helped to pioneer is being used against them by today's younger (if no less robotic) players like Safina, Azarenka, Wozniaki, etc., and on any given day such contemporaries as Dementieva, Kuznetsova, Zvonereva....and at the end of the day only the SERVES of the Williams actually set them apart from the pack, since they are no longer assured of merely "outhitting" their opponents...

All of this leads me back to the true "topic" here...most likely no one named Williams will win the French

Topic:
I am gonna take a wild guess here and say Dementieva.I would spare myself the long comment, cause its gonna take whole too long.Basics:very good movement, hunger for GS win, beeing in very good shape.

Offtopic:
Why ya all hatin on Serena?God,she is the number one player out there,no doubt,cmon...If Henin was on the Tour now i would laught out loud, but now i dont care if Serena is N2 or N200 in the ranks. The pure fact is that when she comes out on the court she is the clear favourite.Big deal that she said that.At least its all true.

Leena,i have to say that im becoming pissed off by your post every now and then.
The forum is for free opinion expressions,i know, but you get bitchy very often and talk about tennis players in rude maner and whether i like the player or not i find your statements often to be too over the top.

Peace.

Tog,

Please re-read my post...
I didn't pick Dementieva to WIN the French...I only mentioned her among the multitude of one dimensional power players that propagate the WTA tennis scene today :?

P.s. Elena COULD just be in there with a "puncher's" chance...(seems that's all they do now anyway..)

In response to Acid_Spot, I'm sorry if I come off to you like I'm "hatin" on Serena, but like it or not, that pretty much sums up the Williams' careers....don't get me wrong, there can be NO DOUBT that they're both GREAT players destined for the Hall of Fame, but for ALL that they have accomplished in their careers, the tennis pundits have known for years that they've only really "touched" on their TRUE potential and wasted a lot of it... :?

Two people picked Demented? Ha!

I went through expecting her to win the Aussie Open this year after such an impressive run during Aussie season, only to play a scared match vs. Serena. I love her, but she drives me nuts. :blackeye:
