Tomas Berdych - Road To Grand Slam Title

Postby VernieBoi » 10 Jul 2019, 03:09

Hello Guys.

I decided, that I will play seasons mode as Tomas Berdych, starting in year 2004. And I have one main goal -> Do something Berdych never done in his successful career. Win a Grand Slam Title.

Before I start this diary I want to let you know about few changes I made to tournaments.

1)ATP 500 and lower are best of three sets, with third set being master tie-break.
2)ATP 1000 are same as real life, except finals are played as best of five sets.
3)And there is one major change to Grand Slams too, all grand slams have five set tie-breaker at 6-6. (Same for Davis Cup)
4)World Tour Finals are best of three with finals being best of five sets.

Also I play on Master 5 now.

Okay, let's go.

2004
As I wrote earlier, I will start as Tomas Berdych in 2004, this was the first year he had some success on ATP Tour and it was the first year he finished in Top 50.
Berdych started this year as no. 139. I really didn't want to play some qualyfying rounds, so I decided, that we will start this season in Brisbane.
Not only that he will play in main draw, he was place from being seeded player. Yeah Brisbane didn't have strong ranking field, but there were many good players.

(If you don't want to read full text, Quick Results and Final recap are down the page)

Brisbane (ATP 250)
In first round Berdych played no.8 seeded -> Julien Boutter, Boutter is ranked 118th in the world, one place higher than Berdych, so I thought it won't be that hard to win this match.
And I was wrong, Berdych lost his first service game and couldn't find any weapon on return, so he lost the first set 4/6.
He started well in the second, quickly going for his first break and holding serve. Berdych was much better in the second set and Boutter couldn't do just anything as Berdych won the second set 6/0.
Master tie-break wasn't as decisive. After two changes of sides, the score was 6-6, but Berdych started to play really great tennis from here, winning the next 4 points and finishing the match.

In the second round Berdych faced off against 123rd player of the world, Cecil Mamiit, after the first round troubles, Berdych didn't want to play another drama match.
And he didn't, as he went quickly for the 5/0 lead in the first, Mamiit won his first game, but Berdych had no problem to close the first set on his own service.
Second set wasn't much different to the first, as Berdych won him 6/2, progressing to Quaterfinals.

In his first quatefinals, Berdych went to play No.1 seed, number 43 in the world, Todd Woodbridge.
Woodbridge played a lot of good volleys in the first set, had 2 break points and used them both, Berdych didn't have any answer on the serve-volley tactic, that Woodbridge was playing as Woodbridge won the first set 6/2.
Second set was suddenly different, as Berdych served really well and didn't let Woodbridge to attack net. On the other side Woodbridge had to save 3 break points on his first service game in the second set, as he did some unusual faults in his net game. Berdych got to break points again at 2/1 on games, and finally converted the fifth break point to take the 3/1 lead. Berdych didn't have any problems on service and won the second set 6/3.
The master tie break for one sided for Berdych as he played some great passing shots and didn't lost any service point, as he won the tie break 10-3

In semifinals, Berdych faced Guillermo Canas, world number 12 back in 2001, Canas was number 145 now, but he is making his comeback to get back to the best positions.
Berdych went with one tactic to this match, try to finish the points at the net as much as possible, because Canas was really great defender, so making the points from baseline would be really hard.
Berdych went quickly for the break to lead 2/1 but Canas without any trouble re-broke to make it 2/2, Berdych again took the break and lead 3/2, held his serve to make it 4/2. At 4/3 Berdych was loosing 0-40 on his service, but got back to deuce. But he lost the next two points, so Canas made it back to 4/4. Berdych then went to break Canas again, to immediately lose his serve once again to make it 5/5. Both guys then held their services just for the third time to make it 6/6. Berdych won the longest (22 shots) rally to make it 3-3 in tie break. Canas then won another longest (24 shots) rally to make it 6-5 for him and serving. But Berdych won both return points, first after great volley game and then after perfect forehand shots. Canas then made amazing passing shot, but Berdych did the same on next point, Berdych was leading 8-7. Canas held both his service points without trouble. Canas was then leading 10-9 and went to serve once again. Canas then did some Nadal sort-of shots and finished the first set 7/6(9).
And man, Canas was just different player in the second set. He started to play more aggresive, he just did what he wanted with Berdych. One thing that worked better for Tomas was first serve, that's like the only reason why he wasn't broken for 4 games in the second set. Canas played like really good, much better than Berdych, he didn't let Berdych do his volley game, and when he did, it was after some great dropshot followed by winning passing shot. The first break came at 4/4, as Canas took his chance and went for 5/4 lead. And Canas without any problems closed the second set to win it 6/4. To compare stats, Berdych did 33 winners in the first set, but when Canas changed his game, Berdych could hit just 11 winners in the second.

Quick Results
1R - Berdych X Boutter(8) 4/6 6/0 1/0(6)
2R - Berdych X Mamiit 6/1 6/2
QF - Berdych X Woodbridge 2/6 6/3 1/0(3)
SF - Berdych X Canas 6/7(9) 4/6

Rank before: 119
Rank after: 108

Highlights of the week:
Doha -> Agassi d. Roddick 6/1 6/4
Chennai -> Nalbandian d. Federer 6/4 3/6 1/0(4)
Brisbane -> Canas d. Kiefer 6/3 6/2

I am happy with this first tournament, even though the SF loss kinda hurt, but more of these will come, so I need to toughen up a bit :D Got wildcard to Auckland and Sydney, and I will probably try the Sydney tournament, to really make sure that I will be in main draw at Australian Open.

Hello, thanks.
In Data Folder you have to go to TourCategory.(ATP or WTA) in every category there is line where is written: ''TieInLastSet'', you have to change to 2 (code for Master Tiebreak, 1 is for classic tie-break at 6-6 and 0 is for no tie-break.). You also have here ''TieDoubleLastSet'' which belongs to Doubles Matches, if this line is not here, you can simply add it, nothing will happen to the game.

(Part 2)

Sydney (ATP 250)
So, as I wrote earlier, I decided to take the wild card to perform at tournament in Sydney. I was surprised how many great players were there, including 4 players from Top 20.

Guillermo Coria (no.4 in the world) was first seeded, followed by Nalbandian(no.8), Philippoussis(no.12) and Hewitt(no.15).

In first round Berdych faced Mario Ancic, who was ranked 68th in the world. Berdych had break point in first game of the match, but couldn't convert it. Berdych had another 2 break points in fifth game and converted the second to take the first break of the match. Ancic managed to get the break back in the tenth game to make it 5/5. Berdych didn't convert any of his 2 break points in next game, but held his serve with no trouble, so it was 6/6. Berdych went quickly for 4-1 lead with two mini-breaks. Berdych then finished the tiebreak with ace to make it 7-4. First break of the second set came in sixth game, as Berdych converted the first breakpoint. Berdych was serving for the match at 5/3, Ancic took the 40-15 lead, but Berdych then won 4 points in a row to win his first match in Sydney.

In second round Berdych went on to play against Tommy Robredo, sixth seeded player (30th in the world). Robredo was better player right from the start, quickly took the first break of the match to make it 2/2 in first set and that's just how the match went, Robredo won the first set 6/0 in 21 minutes. Berdych won his first and only game at 0/6 0/5. He lost in 49 minutes 0/6 1/6.

Quick results
1R Berdych X Ancic 7/6(4) 6/3
2R Berdych XRobredo 0/6 1/6

Rank before: 108
Rank after: 105

Highlights of the week

Auckland -> Gaudio d. Spadea 6/3 6/3
Sydney -> Robredo d. Novak 6/1 6/2
(yep, both Berdych losses went to eventual winner of tournament)

Final Recap
Berdych played really good in first round, but the second match against Robredo was disaster. Berdych has obviously problems with defending players, but I think, we can make good result at Australian Open, if we won't face any defender :D :D.

(part 3)

Australian Open (Grand Slam)
Berdych went straight to main draw, but with his ranking outside Top 100, draw could have put anyone against him. And the draw delivered, Berdych had to face Rainer Schuettler, fifth player in the world, finalist of Australian Open 2003.

Schuettler played two tournaments before AO, but won only one match, so yeah, Berdych had to face player from top 5, but Schuettler was out of form, so let's hope that Berdych will make a surprise in this match!

In the first set, Berdych went quickly for the 3/0 lead with one break. And Berdych had no problem to finish the first set on return as he broke Schuettler once again to win 6/2.
Berdych got the 3/0 lead again in the second set, but Schuettler made it back to 3/3. Schuettler had break point next game, but Berdych got his game back together just in time to save it and win the game to start third 3-game winning streak to make it 6/3 in the second set.
Schuettler broke Berdych and went to lead 4/1 in third set. But Berdych broke back to make it 4/5 and serve was on Berdych. Schuettler had set point and broke Berdych again to win the third 6/4. Berdych saved break point on his first service game in fourth set. On the other side, Schuettler saved 3 Berdych's break points in the next game. 2 games later Berdych lead 40/0 on return, converted 1st break point and took the lead to 3/2. Schuettler got back to make it 4/4 in the fourth set. Both guys then held their next games without problem, but Berdych took Schuettler's service game for another time in eleventh game to make it 6/5 and to serve for the win. And Berdych did it!! Berdych won his service game to close this
2 hours and 44 minutes long match. He defeated fifth player in the world and last year's Australian Open finalist!
Yeah Berdych finally defeated defender, but Schuettler was surely worst player of the three (Canas and Robredo).

In second round, Berdych played Alberto Martin (Spain, 46th) yup, another defender waiting on Berdych.
Martin started the match better, leadin 2/0 in the first. But Berdych started playing incredibly good and in the end, won the first set 6/2.
Berdych started off second set with a 2/0 lead. He then won another opponent service to lead 5/2 and without trouble closed the second set 6/2.
Berdych broke Martin in the start of the second set, but couldn't finish the match at 5/4, and Martin found his game from the first two games of the match again, completely turned
3rd set around and took it 7/5. Berdych didn't convert any of his 3 BP in the first game of fourth set. Berdych got another 3 BPs in eleventh game, and finally converted his fifth breakpoint of fourth set to take the 6/5 lead. And Berdych continues through tournament as he served the match out, winning after 2 hours and 46 minutes.

No. 30 Robby Ginepri awaits us next. I will write the next results hopefully soon

Re: Tomas Berdych - Road To Grand Slam Title

Postby VernieBoi » 12 Jul 2019, 21:48

(part 4)

As I wrote earlier, 30th player of the world, Robby Ginepri is our opponent in round 3.

Berdych started the match very nervously as he made many errors and lost his first service game of the match. Berdych broke back quickly and there were no BPs towards end of the set.
Tiebreak was next, Ginepri went easily to 5-1, Berdych 3 more points, but Ginepri got the TB 7-4. Second set was much different story. Berdych lost just 2 points on his 4 service games, broke Ginepri 2 times and won the second set in less than 30 minutes 6/1. Third set was quite same as Ginepri held his serve to score of 2/2, but Berdych won next 4 games to get the third set 6/2. Ginepri broke Berdych in the start of fourth set, but Berdych won 6 out of 7 next games to win 6/3 in the fourth. Berdych put on great performance, except the first set, the best in this tournament and got to his first 4th round on Grand Slam tournament!!

Our 4th rounds opponent was as much surprisive as Berdych. 90th player of the world, Jose Acasuco.
Nothing much to write about the first set as Berdych won it 6/0 in 20 minutes, while losing just 5 points. The second set was bit harder, as Acasuco took Berdych to few deuces, but Berdych still managed to win the set 6/0. Third set was toughest, Acasuco won his only 2 games and Berdych finished the match after 1 hour and 31 minutes and advanced too his first career Grand Slam Quaterfinal!!

Our next opponent was fourth seeded Guillermo Coria, he is the FOURTH defended in fifth match we will face, but Coria is much, much better than Berdych's previous opponents, Coria has 96 speed and after the last time we faced really good defender (Robredo 0/6 1/6) I have a bad feeling about this..

Coria got a quick break and without problem held his serve, Berdych was closer in third game to winning, but still lost it after 3rd deuce. But Berdych didn't give up, he broke Coria, but he ultimately lost his next service game for 1/4, then he broke Coria again and finally for fourth try held his serve to make it 3/4, Coria then managed to hold his next service games and won the first set 6/4. Berdych really tried to do anything, but it looked like he gave everything to the first set, as he lost the second easily 6/0. Berdych really, really tried, but could have win only 2 games in the third set. But still great performance by Berdych!! Tomas even had more winner than errors, that just shows, that played well, wasn't just enough on Coria.

Quick Results
1R - Berdych X Schuettler(5) 6/2 6/3 4/6 7/5
2R - Berdych X Martin 6/2 6/2 5/7 7/5
3R - Berdych X Ginepri(30) 6/7(4) 6/1 6/2 6/3
4R - Berdych X Acasuco 6/0 6/0 6/2
QF - Berdych X Coria(4) 4/6 0/6 2/6

Rankings before: 108
Ranking after: 58(!!)

Highlights of the week
Australian Open - (4)Coria X Agassi(3) 6/4 6/0 6/4
Coria lost just 21 games in the last 3 matches, 6 in QF, 7 in SF and 8 in Finale

Final Review
Berdych put on a hell of a ride at AO 2004, he used the draw that was served for him as much as he could, got to his, not only 3rd or 4th round, but even quaterfinals, this was a succesful tournament and I hope Berdych will continue in his great performances, in the end, Berdych lost to winner of the tournament again :D Now, we need to decide, how many tournaments we will play before Indian Wells (and Miami), we will see

Yup, I'm reading too. And really enjoying it. Keep it up! :applause:
Just to answer your question about Berdych being one of the greatest to have never lifted a Grand Slam trophy, I personally believe players like Ferrer, Tsonga, Nishikori and even Raonic (at their prime) are better contenders to make it to the list of all-time greats with no GS title.

You may be right, that they are/were better, when they were in their prime, but Berdych was like the most consistent of them. Berdych is 8-8 with Ferrer, while leading him 3-0 in Grand Slam matches.
I just see Berdych as a better Grandslam player.
Berdych - 1 Final, 6 SF, 10 QF
Ferrer - 1 Final, 5 SF, 11 QF
Tsonga - 1 Final, 5 SF, 9 QF
Based on these stats, I think we can agree on that they are all very, very equal
I didn't include Nishikori or Raonic here, as they both have many years before them I think

(part 5)
This post will be a bit forgettable, because I lost my previous writing and don't remember much from the matches I played, but I will try my best

After Australian Open, Berdych went on to play 2 tournaments before Indian Wells and Miami.

Highlights of week 5
Montpellier: (1)Coria X Youzhny 7/5 7/6(1)
Sofia: (1)Srichaphan X Ljubicic 7/6(4) 6/3
Quito: (6)Canas X Ginepri(4) 6/4 6/4

Rotterdam (ATP 500)
Rotterdam had many good players and Berdych had to face one of them, as his first opponent was third seed David Nalbandian, Berdych was quickly losing 0/2, he may got back to 2/2, but that was all he showed in this match as Nalbandian made quick work with him, winning 6/3 6/0

Quick Results
1R - Berdych X Nalbandian 3/6 0/6

Rank before: 58
Rank after: 64

Highlights of the week
Rotterdam: Ljubicic X Nalbandian(3) 6/7(5) 7/6(6) 10-8
Memphis: Safin X Schuettler(1) 6/2 6/3
Buenos Aires: (4)Youzhny X Canas 6/3 6/3

Second tournament Berdych has played before IW was in Marseille.

First round match was against seeded Victor Hanescu, I don't remember much from the match, but I know that Berdych had serious trouble converting breakpoints, still managed to win 7/6 7/5.

In second round Berdych faced home player Cyril Saulnier, this was definitely the toughest lost Berdych had yet.
Saulnier got to 2/0 and 4/2 lead, Berdych got back and first set went to tie-break, Saulnier had 2 SP, but Berdych saved both, that ultimately lead to not saving the third as Saulnier got the first 7/6(6)
Berdych converted just 1 out of his 8 breakpoints in entire match, not using 5 he had in the second set so the second set went to tie-break too. Berdych won easily 7-1 and match went to Master tiebreak decider.
Saulnier took 5-1 lead, but served doublefault to give Berdych one more chance, Berdych even got to 8-8, but let Saulnier finish next point on net and Saulnier finished the match with his ninth ace to close the match :( .
Berdych had 60 winners and just 20 errors, won 7 more points than his opponent, but these are the things that can happen if your decider is master tiebreak :D .

Quick Results
1R - Berdych X Hanescu(5) 7/6(5) 7/5
2R - Berdych X Saulnier 6/7(6) 7/6(1) 8-10

Rank before: 64
Rank after: 61

Highlights of the week
Rio de Janeiro: (5)Henman X Roddick(1) 6/3 4/6 10-6
Marseille: (3)Canas X Costa(1) 6/2 6/3
Delray Beach: (1)Spadea X Beck 6/3 4/6 10-2

And Berdych decided that he can't go with these results to USA, so he went to Mexico to play in Acapulco.
I'll try to release this part ASAP, hopefully still on Monday.

Re: Tomas Berdych - Road To Grand Slam Title

Postby VernieBoi » 15 Jul 2019, 20:40

(part 6)
So Berdych went to Mexico to play tournament in Acapulco, as he wanted to improve his results before the Masters 1000 tournament come.
In first round Berdych faced sixth seed Felix Mantilla, Berdych put on good performace, saved all 4 Mantilla's breakpoints and converted his three in three games to win the first match 6/3 6/2.

Second round opponent was 69th player in the world right now, Ivo Karlovic.
Karlovic proved to be tough opponent right from the start as he suprisingly took the 2/0 lead. Berdych got back to 2/2. Both survived few deuces, but there were no breakpoints, until 6/5 for Berdych, when he got setpoint and won the first set 7/5. And omg, those starts to the sets are bad every-freakin-time, Karlovic got again a 2/0 lead. Berdych again got back to 2/2, after Karlovic made double-fault on fourth Berdych breakpoint in second set.
And the second set continued almost same as the first as there were many deuces but no BPs, tiebreak decided the second set, Berdych took mini-break right at start and the second on match point and won 7/5 7/5(3).
So Berdych advances to his third quaterfinals of this season 8-) .

Another challenge was waiting for Berdych, because he had to face third seeded Jonas Bjorkman next.
And Berdych had another bad start to match, but this time it wasn't only one game, but whole set. Bjorkman dominated with his awesome net play and won easily 6/2 while saving both Berdych's breakpoints.
Bjorkman started in second set with two easy love games. Berdych held his serve, Bjorkman made some great 1st services, but Berdych did really good returns and had another breakpoint and Bjorkman made doublefault so it was 2/2 in second. both held services, Berdych had set point at 5/4, but he didn't converted it, he lead 40/0 at 6/5, first two set points again weren't converted, but the totally fourth finally was, so Berdych took the second 7/5.
Bjorkman was leading 9-6 in Master tiebreak, Berdych saved all three match points, then saved another 2 at 9-10 and 10-11, but couldn't save the sixth one as Bjorkman rushed the net right after Berdych's second serve and didn't make the mistakes like he had on previous points. Berdych was 5-1 in winners-errors stats (in master tiebreak), still couldn't win. From 24 points, Bjorkman was 13 times on net, being 9 times successful... :(

Final review
Berdych took top 20 player to big battle, but sadly couldn't win this one, still best tournament out of the three he played between AO and IW, this wasn't that bad. Hope to win at least few matches in the next Masters 1000 tournaments.
