World Tour question and suggestion

Postby CC » 31 Dec 2009, 02:15

(Sorry if I've not responded to posts lately -- been away / busy, but wanted to post this topic before I forgot it.)

In the World Tour, how well must I play for my opponent to retire? I've noticed retirements noted for matches between CPU players, but none have ever retired against me (but maybe they should have considered it).

What would you think about adding a home court element so that when playing against an opponent on a court in their country (but not the same country as the human player's WT character) the crowd cheers more for the CPU player and maybe even boos for the human player; also, you could apply this for the human player when his WT character is playing in his country but not the country of the CPU opponent. You might even apply this for all matches, so that it works this way when WT CPU vs. CPU matches are viewed by the human player. I mention this because I have seen many matches on television in which the crowd's support of their player seemed to be a factor in the outcome of the match. Of course, you could even throw in some poor line calls that are biased in favor of the home player, but that may lead to other things that would be difficult to constrain (challenge system, etc.) (many of us can certainly think of a few countries that have a history of making poor calls in favor of their player  ).

I like the idea but home court advantage wouldn't necessarily affect the outcome of a match no matter how loud the crowd is. For example youtube the fed cup match between Russia and Israel. The crowd was outrageous and Russia still won. And I certaintly wouldn't mind the cpu retiring a few times during a match.

Yeah, I guess what I am wanting to replicate may not be possible with just crowd noises, which is the effect that home court support can have on real matches; as you said, just have the crowd cheering the non-home player may not affect your performance in TE. Hmmm. I guess it would have to be a mixture of things that somehow made you feel that you weren't just competing against the guy across the net but also against those in the stands. But if you beat him, you could get that satisfaction if knowing that you didn't just beat him, you beat all those cheering for him, and then you could say to the crowd, "Sorry to disappoint you by beating your favorite player in his home country, but I hope be back here next year to defend my title."
