Adjusting Fatigue

Postby Spallo » 14 Aug 2017, 00:45

Hey Manu,

as I progress slowly in the game to my desired difiiculty lvl at Pro 10 (atm Pro 4) and played my first grand slam, I noticed, that the fatigue you are getting is, for me at least, a bit too low.

I was in the third round of the Australien Open against a top 15 player and won (after that I increased the difiiculty lvl immediatly  ) after 5 sets, and both of us were pretty much rested. The match wasnt that long with 3 hours, but the last two sets were very hard fought. And yeah it is hard court and my opponent was actually a good serve and volley player, but pretty much no effect on the fatigue stats cant be desired after such a match!?!

So I would like some clarifications about the match fatigue....

1) I noticed it goes down very fast, if you are in many hard fought ralleys and the effects are noticavle at once. But if you are not, you get no fatigue at all?

2) Is there a hidden fatigue stat, that the player cant see?

3) I searched in the tennis.ini for the setting, but I am not sure which "tiredness" or maybe even wt_attrition?? I should change....if i want to after your clarification of course.

Thx in advance, because I know you answer probably in a few hours :applause: And like everytime. Thank you for this great game!!!

Hello,

0) yes, the fatigue is very hard to tune to work in all situations, so right now, it's mostly tuned only to fit its initial purpose : avoid doing accelerations all the time.
The long term fatigue is usually not really penalizing. I'll try to rework that for TE4, but I'm not sure I could get a more satisfying result.
However, if the rallies are really short, it's normal the fatigue plays almost no role ; eg: a few years ago, we got something like a 50/48 score in the 5th set of a Wimbledon match and one of the players said he was still feeling fit at the end of the match... :)

1) Correct

2) No

3) Unfortunately, there's no parameter to change to tune the fatigue more to your liking, as it's actually a pretty complex system.

Ok that clarifies things for me. I guessed something like that and that you cant adjust the fatigue makes sense, if there are too many parameters to consider.

However, I have a suggestion for TE4 about the fatigue system...

I dont know wether the speed or the shot fatigue is more important in TE 2013, but what about making the fatigue from the shots dependend on the ball speed (if that is possible somehow), after your shot? I guess in average it is much higher on hard surface, because of the incoming ball speed, than for example on clay. So you offset the shorter ralleys a bit...

I think that would have disadvantages for some playstyles though. Esp. for my favoured counter style

Another suggestion is, to make the fatigue a bit exponential. If you have mutiple long ralleys in a row, then it would go down a little more quickly. So the incentive to strike decisive shots early increases dramatically. This would also serve another purpose, namely the relatively low number of unforced errors compared to the real life tennis (esp. in the lower ranks).

I really dont know, if this is feasible in any way, because I have no idea about programming and gamedesign. So that are just two general ideas about the fatigue system :D

Strike speeds are about same on all surfaces ; if anything, they might be a bit faster on clay because you should get more shoulder height accelerations, and less slower accelerations because the ball is very low (like on grass & indoor).

Only the Counter might produce faster shots on faster surfaces, due to the ball speed... :)
