Net Play and CPU volleyers

Postby Guest » 23 Sep 2009, 22:05

I really love Tennis elbow and so much of it is good fun HOWEVER the difficulty between playing a defender or baseliner and a volleyer (or even normal player) is too great. My player is ranked 95 or something and i can destroy pretty much any net player, they just chip and charge every ball and i pick them off. i feel a much more accurate difficulty curve when playing a higher ranked player who is a defender or baseliner, this is how it should be. I play on pro sub 0, should i start playing net and even normal players on master or pro 5?

Also returning serve seems to be too easy, i am playing ivo karlovic at the moment, ranked 45 or so and his serve power is 99, is this capped by the difficulty level i am on? (i.e. is the max speed capped by my difficulty level) i'd imagine Ivo would be more effective at the net if his serves could cause more of a problem. Returning serve vs other plays is tougher as they do have the upperhand in the ralley from the start and therefore accelerate me a lot more however vs a volleyer i can usually hit it down the line(ish) or cross court to put me in front of the ralley. Sure against bad players this should be easy (see murray vs that american volleyer at the USO) but vs ivo breaking serve should be much harder.

Obviously you need to increase the difficulty.

Yes, on Master sub 5 (and I played Master sub 8 a few month ago) it's the same, beating volleyers and normal players is very easy, but beating defender is too hard. Ivo Karlovic is very easy to beat in any difficulty, though Tsonga, Djokovic, Baghdatis and Joao Souza (!) are tough to beat, especially when they play with their powerful inverted forehand.

Guest, are u playing with the v1.0c ..? Volleyers should rush the net less often than before...

Serve speed is lowered if you play in difficulty lower than Pro-10.

For next update, Defenders will be slightly more easy...

well yes maybe i do need to change the difficulty i play on, how much more do you think i should increase it for a normal/ volleyer? I beat joao sousa at wimbledon the other day in straight sets, it is a bit silly as i had just had an epic 5 setter vs a player ranked 90 odd ( i was 150 ranked at this point) and i thrashed a player ranked 20. I have the update (it auto detects updates right?) and while it makes it a bit more difficult they still hit the ball straight at me with not a lot of power and sprint in, i think maybe the problem is their choice of when to come in because when i faced almagro when he came into the net he was really tough as he chose really good accelerations to come in on.

ANother question: in world tour mode do my stats always increase? I know they go down because of lack of training but is there a cap? will i get to 100 everything at some point?

i guess my main problem is that there is such a disparity between different player types, i might have to change my difficulty now but really to be a well balanced game i shouldnt have to do that, it would be the last step in making this a really great game. I will have a user name soon, i am just registering/.

Another thing that I noticed... volleyers play better on hard courts than on grass :?

I was going to ask this in the 'ideas for next update' thread but I'll put it here.

Is it possible to make a new animation for when players come into the net where they extend or lunge a bit more for the ball?

At the moment all the use is the current strokes and especially on the backhand side it seems like they are not covering as much of the net as they could.

If the volleyer type of player had an extra move to make them reach a bit more they will be more successful at serve and volley. It could be also used as like an acceleration where they can only use it a few times per point.

PS. This would mean that you would'nt have to make defenders easier. I play at pro-1 and I feel that there is so much more to the game I can progress with if defenders are tough to beat.

i agree with the post above, there is somethig missing from their game. Some facet that can make them more difficult. I g uess we have to accept that volleyers will always be a little easier because that is how Tennis is at the moment HOWEVER there is a disproportionate difference in this game. I do think the AI needs tweaking though, they hit such bad approach shots sometimes, i'd be inside the baseline and joao sousa would plop it to me unaccelerated and i would knock it past him. Do you have any ideas manu?

Also...when you serve wide, for instance, and start to come in behind it, if you even START to guess wrong it's almost impossible to change directions and move to the returner's reply... :?
In real tennis that's why you employ a split-step as you determine where the ball is going...
Maybe these ideas could be implemented in future updates:
1) lunge volleys
2) more reach on the volley
3) maybe the ability to use a split-step to stop your forward progress and be able to change directions better
4) backhand smash
I've gotten pretty good at volleying against the CPU when he's set at realistic levels (pro 10) but I still notice this rather unrealistic inability to reach volleys that I would more often be able to reach in real life.. .

Hey everyone again, i have been doing some testing and what i have found that is (par exemple) joao sousa re created in the training match scenario suffers because of the lack of power in his ground strokes. A default player who has 75% for every stat vs my player with 75% for all stats is MUCH harder. I played this joao clone with a clone of my own player who has ok ground strokes (not much power) a bit of speed and top spin and it was much easier even though my character has a lot less points than joao. I pushed up my difficulty level to pro 10 and i am getting to the correct difficulty now HOWEVER i fear the day i play a volleyer with good g roundies as i think i will get moosed good and proper. I hope my feedback helps.

Related to my earlier post....most times when I serve and come in to volley, even SLOWWW balls hit by the CPU are way more difficult than they should be to volley... :?

I think that the "inertia" needs to be tuned a tad, (maybe because I'm using a keyboard, maybe not) because my anime is WAAY too slow to change direction...even when I , myself, can see the ball earlier enough to TRY to change direction by pushing the appropriate keys...

As I've said before, I'm one of the older TE players and in real tennis I can still react much, much quicker than the TE animes when moving forward to the net...

The way it is NOW, it would make much more sense if the CPU was actually RIPPING his passing shot, instead of passing with these SLOWWW "floaters" mostly crosscourt, that you SHOULD have a more realistic chance to get to...but have to watch helplessly as they float by...

Right now, if I guess one way and he hits the other way with this "floater" my player more often seems to "hesitate" when I try to change direction rather than make a more realistic "quick" adjustment to at least "stab" at the volley...

Maybe, as AB1 suggested, there could be a set number of these "stabs" or "lunges" (much like the accelerations) OR maybe only ONE stab per serve & volley attempt, since at the highest CPU levels even with a free stab there's no guarantee that you'll win the point anyway...but at least you'd have a better chance...

I've noticed that when my player is right "on top" of the net that he CAN jump, stab or lunge for volleys...it would seem that he should be able to do likewise when moving FORWARD to the net as well...

Maybe this could be used only for CPU play since so many online players seem to feel that volleying is already too effective...

I agree with most of the posts that defeating Volleyers is very very easy. I easily defeated Sampras at UK Slam with the difficulty turned on to Incredible Sub 6 (Won like 6-4 6-2 6-2) But when you face someone like Correjta or Nadal it seems like an impossible feat as the top spin that hit with seems impossible to hit back regardless of your height or power.

I will also say that the volleying is a bit off atm, i mean Sampras was easy to beat because once he came in off of a serve or groundstroke and wanted to volley, i would hit my shot up the line and he would always go and get the ball but also leave the court very exposed. Also the volleying is very hard for the player to actually hit a clean winner but also actually get the ball itself as you cannot split step or anything if you go in the wrong direction.

Manu

I notice that when I'm in training mode the CPU sometimes hits short lobs...unlike when in game mode (pro level) where the lobs are ALWAYS, ALWAYS relatively deep...even when he's on the dead run or jammed...why is that?

ATP and WTA pros don't ALWAYS hit deep lobs...sometimes when they are rushed they mis-calculate and hit weaker lobs...

Volleyer are too easy to beat, but yesterday I faced Karlovic and I beat 7-5 6-4, he wasn't volleyin', he was hitting acelerations from baseline, by the serve wasn't too easy to stop, when he got to net, I always pass by short acels, sometimes I get to net he put alot of deep lobs, maybe 10 times and I couldn't reach it
