it's mostly for TEM2, to avoid possible compatibility issues. And I'm only a bit more than 10 years late to update to DirectX 9...

the game stops without any error message..? Could you post your System.log ..?
1 issue I found out with the old Sam Megapatch is that DX9 can load bigger textures than DX8, leading to more memory use.
But actually in Sam Megapatch a lot of the textures are way too big, so maybe you have the same issue..? Check the size of your textures and lower their size if they are too big (eg: court textures shouldn't be more than 2048x1024 ; icons for menu = 512x512 max, etc..).
You easily can see all texture sizes by choosing "Details" in the Windows Explorer, and right clicking the column to add "Dimensions".
