2ND Year 2007

Beginning of the Season Interview

Reporter: So Mario you're currently ranked in the Top 40 in singles and Top 25 in Doubles. How do you feel about that?

Mario: It feels great at the way that I rose up the ranking this quick. I will be lying if I said that I saw this coming so quick. To be honest I was just hoping to get into the Top 300 and work on my second year to get in the top 100 and be looking to get into the grand slams. But everything will have to change.

Reporter: For a time period it did look like you were struggling and you decided to play doubles during the US Open Series what made you decide on that and how much did you think it help you?
Mario: I never thought I would play doubles but Jeff Coetzee approach me that one week he needed a partners because his got injured and he was giving a Wildcard so me and my coach talked it over and as you see the rest is history. Jeff is like my older brother/ mentor and sometimes like my dad. *Laughs* He probably going to hurt me for saying that. But he also helps me see that some of the things in my game I need to improve and change. Anytime we are on the court playing doubles or practicing its so much fun. I can honestly say if not for playing Doubles and learning more things from Jeff who knows how high I would have been ranked at the end of the season.

Reporter: Do you plan on continuing to play doubles the whole season?

Mario: Yes as long as Jeff wants me to be his partners I will continue to play. I love playing doubles with him.

Reporter: What are your goals for the 2007 season?

Mario: My goals for this season in singles are to get into the Top 15 and make the second week of 3 of the 4 grand slams. Also I would like to win 4 titles this season I really want to win a Masters Series Title. In doubles I want to get into the Top 5 in doubles and win a Grand Slam as well as make it into the World Tour Finals.

Reporter: Thanks for your time Mario. Wish you all the best this season.

Post Conference Interview

Reporter: Congrats Mario Diming on not only winning your first ATP Tour Title but also following that up with the Doubles Title with your partner Jeff Coetzee. How does all of this feel?

Mario: To be honest I’m speechless as my team and doubles partner would tell you that never happens. I’m so happy that I can’t believe that I spoke about this at the beginning of the week my season goals of just getting 4 titles had no idea that I was going to get one this quick.

Reporter: Well I will also tell you the good news that with this title your going to be in the top 30. This is an amazing thing considering you were ranked in the 800s the time last year.

Mario: That’s good news to hear. One of my side goals was to try and get seeded for the Australian Open because I have trouble getting to the third round because I been unseeded or had to qualify to get in the last three grand slams.

Reporter: Well you might have just achieved that, congrats on this big week for you. I wish you all the best this season!!

Mario: Thanks!

Post Match Interview

Reporter: Can you explain what happen out there today?

Mario: To be honest no. I have no idea what happened out there. But I will give him all the credit he neutralized all my strength and was like a back board getting everything back no matter what I threw at him. It really got frustrating but that why he is the number three palyer in the world.

Report: Is there one thing that you could have done better to maybe made it a closer match?

Mario: You’re kidding right? I guess I could have stolen all of his rackets and hid them somewhere.

Reporter: Thanks for your time and good luck in The Australian Open.

Mario: Thanks.

Next Tournament will be the Australian Open. Took a brief look at the Australian Open and I’m the 29th Seed in singles with a tough section of the draw. My second round match can be against Florian Mayer who I lost to once. Third Round could be against (5) James Blake who I’m 0-2 against and only won 9 games in the 2 meetings. Round of 16 could be against (10) Ivan Ljubicic. Quarterfinals could meet (4) Tommy Robredo or (19) Lleyton Hewitt. Don’t want to even look at the rest of the draw because it could get super depressing see how my road would get. Good thing my goal for now is to only get to the second week. In doubles Jeff and I are the 7th Seed. In the same Quarter as Paes/ Knowles and same half as the Bryan Brothers.

Australian Open
Surface= NewLine Synthetic
Grand Slam

Round 1- (29) Mario Diming defeats Bjorn Phau 7-6(2) 6-0 6-0
After the first set I just decided to play a little safer and play the rallies and only made 1 unforced error in the second and third set with 20 winners.

Round 2
(29) Mario Diming defeats Florian Mayer 6-4 2-6 7-5 7-6(4).

I technically by the numbers played an okay match but really got out played most of the match and was on my back hill the whole match. I did it 85 winners to only 34 unforced errors. But my opponent did 105 winners to 51 unforced errors. My serve was broken 12 times and I broke his 12 times.

Round 3

(29) Mario Diming defeats (5) James Blake 2-6 6-4 6-2 3-6 6-0.

Technically my best match against a top player. When looking at it my backhand actually won the match for me I hit 40 winners with my backhand and I normally don't have that many. I had to do something different because in the two previous meetings only won 9 games against him.

With this win I made into my first second week of a grand slam.

Round of 16 (29) Mario Diming defeats (10) Ivan Ljubicic 7-5 7-5 6-4.

Now this turned out to be my best match against a top player. It was several times in the match that I should have been behind but kept fighting back to win in straight sets. In the first set I never trailed. Jumped out to a 3-0 lead and after he broke back to get us back to 4-4. I kept ahead and won the set in the second set I got behind early 1-3 and came back to win the set with some good shots as well as targeting his forehand that was going off. In the third set the same thing could be said. Was down 5-3 and won the next 4 games saving 2 set points and winning getting my second top ten win in a row.

Quarter-Finals Won 3-6 7-5 7-6(2) 7-6(4) vs. Paul-Henri Mathieu. This was a very unique match. I started the first set very nervous and just trying to defend and hoping I could win that way. Of course I went down 1-3 very quick and had to regroup and play my game. So I finally was able to play my game and won the next two games with winners. Almost like he PHM noticed and raised his game and won the next 3 games almost with ease. We were on serve the second set the whole time until 6-5 his serve. I had saved 4 break points. He jumped out to a 30-0 lead and I came back and won the next four points to break and win the set. Third set we both held serve until the tiebreak. I saved 3 break points again. In the Tiebreak I jumped out to a 3-1 lead he gets one more point and I rally off the next four to win the tiebreak 7-2. Fourth Set I broke to lead 2-1 he broke me right back to even it right back at 2-2. He held serve to go up 3-2. Then I won the next 3 games even coming back from 0-40 to save my serve to go up 5-3. He held his serve to get to 5-4 and he played an amazing game to break me. I got to 40-15 2 match points and he played three amazing points back to back to back to earn a break point and I made an unforced error and he breaks back to get to 5-5. The next game I break him at love and serving for the match again. Once again he plays another amazing game hitting four winners to break me back at 15. Now the tiebreak I get the mini break to go up 3-1. He holds his point now 3-2. I hit my only ace of the match to get to 4-2. He hit another winner and gets the mini break back to get to 4-3. I than win both of his points on his serve to get to 6-3 and he hits another win and gets to 6-4 and in the last point I get him to hit an unforced error to win the match. I got really lucky to get out of this match in 4 sets because it looked like if we were going to the 5th my serve wouldn’t have held up. I hit 97 winners to his 89 winners and 56 unforced errors to his 47 unforced errors. The most telling stat of the match was the net approach I went 21/31 and hit 15 volley winners. Which have match how many I have hit in my last three singles matches.

SEMIFINALS ARE= (1) Federer vs. (18) Djokovic (29) Diming(me) vs. (15) Gasquet

In Doubles Jeff Coetzee and Myself took out the (3) Paes/ Knowles 6-2 6-4
Will face World #1 Bryan Brothers who we have beaten 3 times straight, once this year already. We also are still perfect this season not losing a match yet.

Semifinals (15) Richard Gasquet def. (29) Mario Diming 6-4 6-4 6-1. He really just out played me in every aspect of this match. I couldn't do anything to stop him. He came into the match with a form of +0.23 which is crazy considering he played two straight five setters. Even though I very disappointed in the way that I played that match couldn't really get down had my Doubles Semifinals where myself and Jeff Coetzee defeats The Bryan Bros 2-6 7-5 6-1. This is the fourth time straight that we have beaten the Bryan Bros. In the finals we had a tough match but beat the number 2 seed. David Ferrer and Ivan Ljubicic 7-5(5) 3-6 7-5 to win our first grand slam in Doubles. Also for the second straight tournament Jeff and I beat the top three seeds to win the tournament. We are still perfect on the season 14-0. As a team we are about the 5th Team in the World after winning the grand slam. In singles I'm ranked #15 in the top 20 for the first time!!

Side Note- Roger Federer beats Richard Gasquet in the finals 6-4 7-6(5) 6-3.

Next Tournament will be San Jose
