More buttons in game...why not?

Postby swissmade » 01 Mar 2009, 15:35

Okay, like the title say, i'm asking myself the motivation of a control mode with just three buttons. I have true problems (and my friends that tried the game too) playing the game. Especially with tough opponents it is necessary to run from one side to the other of the court and swithing position on the court (when we recieve a drop shot, a short shot or a slice) and off the court (when we are in trouble and we play defensive). So, i don't know if other members have the same problem, but it often happen that i play a lob when i want to do an acceleration, a drop shot when i want to hit a slice,an horrible lob when i want a passing shot etc. And this is so boring and frustrating. I must specify that i don't play this game from a day, but from a lot of time, so i don't need to get used to the gameplay.

In a few words, if all joypads, and of course, all keyboards, have at least six buttons (four standard buttons and two triggers), the question is, why we must continue to rape ourselves? :roll:

I also wish to know if i'm the only one wit this trouble, if the reply will be yes, well, i will be hushed up.

see you soon

You can add 2 more buttons that hit topspin and slice shots.

If you want to have the possibilities to remap these buttons, you have to open the "Tennis.ini" file (or the .ini of your current profile, in the "Profiles" sub-folder), and change this line, under [Menu], from :
CtrlExtraButton = 0
to:
CtrlExtraButton = 1

As for lobs and drop shots, I don't think you can do anything about it.

Maybe I'll add some extra buttons when I'll have the time...

U'd like a button per strike ? ( => 12 buttons for all strikes...)

I made an example of what you could do with six buttons:

-1st button: normal shots, as they are now ingame.
-2nd button: accelerations, "standard" without any up or down arrows pressed, longer (with risk to see the ball long) with up key and shorter (a cross shot with more risk to pick the net) with down key.
-3rd button: slice shots, deep with up key, to mid court with down key.
-4th button: lobs, "standard" without up or down, aggressive with down key and defensive with up key.
-5th button: drop shots
-6th button: menu

The most important thing is to assign one and just one kind of shot for every button, so when the human player try to do a shot, and maybe unintentionally press up or down, his character will do anyway the same kind of shot, just with a minor difference. The goal must be to avoid that two completely different shots (like accelerations and lob, or slice and lob as they are actually in the game) use the same button.

I finished :wink:

I think that would get confusing to have more buttons, I personally wouldn't want more than three.

Indeed it would be just an option to activate in the game, you aren't forced to use it.

I will surely not add any strike ; the additional buttons would be only optional, and shortcut to the existing strikes, and set in the .ini .

Hi all,

It took me a little bit of time, but I got used to the present buttons. But true, at the beginning it was difficult to use a finger of the right hand for the top spin and the other hand for the slice :scratch: , all the more than the effects are all on the right hand for the serve ... :shock: The most difficult, and I'm still doing mistakes, is with drop shots and lobs. Why should drop shots be associated with down key and lobs with the up keys ... uoups ... or the opposite ... :twisted: :D

up for drop shot... ;)
I use the way to pilot a plane for the control : push / forward => go down => shorter strikes ; pull / backward => go up => longer strikes

if u're human, u have to push ur head forward to look down, and pull it backward to look up, so it should be a kind of natural movement... ;)

I think what Swissmade is suggesting is similar to my other favorite tennis game, [censored] Pro. I do like the dedicated slice key like that game has, but the super-hard shot is so hard to control (for me anyhow) I don't even use it that often. The dedicated drop shop button is nice at the net, giving me a bit more control than I have in TE. Overall, I think I like TE2009 better, but that may be for the graphics. Hard to say- I love playing both games :)
