Service preview

Postby CC » 15 Feb 2009, 17:06

From the full documentation:
"If in the character sheet 'Preview' is set to 'Service' or above, then during the service, the ball's impact mark is shown early to help you."

I have never seen this. Always, the only mark that I see with the serve is after the serve, not before. Is there supposed to be some aiming marker visible before the serve as there is with the other type of shot preview?

Hi CC,

I was wondering...While I know that you said that you need the previews for groundstroke rallies, why for the serve? I have my keyboard set up as follows: 1 for left, 2 for down, 3 for right, and 5 for up. When I want to serve to the left I just press the 1 key, serve to the right...press the 3 key...serve in the middle of the service box...no key. It's as simple as that. You may have to experiment with the amount of pressure you use to press the keys, because if you press TOO HARD to the right or the left, the serve may fault wide. But you'll get the hang of it before too long...it's really not all that hard without the service preview. Manu has suggested using the keys 4,5,6,and 8, but I don't think it really matters which ones you use, just that you become comfortable with them. Of course I also use these same keys (1,2,3,5) to move my player around. 2 and 5 I use to move him back and forward....1 and 3 to move him left and right.....

btaylor:

Thanks. I'm not saying that I need it. I am just saying that it doesn't seem to work like the documentation says, and I would like to know if I am missing something or if I have something setup improperly.

Ball Preview has this 5 settings :
- none
- service
- service + rally
- all + danger zone
- all + danger zone + aiming

one may concludes that the service preview is the same as the rally preview, ie: it shows the impact of the ball early (oh, it's what is written in the doc ;) ), and is not related to the aiming which is the latest addition of the preview...
So service preview shows u where ur opponent's service will land when he hits it, making it easier to know where to run...

Thanks, Manutoo. That exactly was my confusion, which is now gone as you have made it very clear. I was equating service preview with aiming preview, thinking that somehow I could aim my serve like I can aim my shots with the aiming helper, and I was wanting to do this just to learn how to better aim my serves. However, this might make it too easy. I guess that I haven't noticed a service preview from the perspective of the receiver. Is it present in online matches? With the aiming preview for regular shots, I see where my opponent is trying to aim their shots (which makes it pretty easy to return their shot). I don't know that I have seen this in online matches. If my online opponent is using service preview, would I be aware of it as the server? I have played some who stand very near the T and yet manage to get to wide serves, and I can't figure out how they can do it. I have the ball preview set to All + Danger Zone, and I never see a service preview (from the perspective of the returner) during online matches or when playing against the CPU.

Unless, maybe you are saying that this is shown only after the serve has been hit, right before impact, which is different from the ball preview of the other shots (where the little aiming thing is shown prior to the hit).

Argh! I just edited this again as I just watched for this in a match with the CPU. I now see the little impact preview after the strike of the serve. OK. That must be what you are referring to. Got it.
