doubles partners are WAY too dumb

Postby campa100anni » 21 Mar 2014, 01:13

I don't know how many of you play doubles match regularry, especially in online matches. I do quite often and I have to say that despite it can be pretty fun sometimes, most of times everything get rrrrrreally frustrating. My partner is "Master 8" so it's supposed to be a quite good player but a lot of times he plays in such a stupid way missing into the net volley with his nose over the net and the court completely empty in front of him or sometimes he opens up an angle with a good shot but then instead of playing a winner on the other side he keeps on playing in the same angle even if my two opponents are both there. A lot of times, I really hate this thing, he comes in when I'm hitting a cross-angle rally with my opponent just to "open a hole" for the down the line winner from my opponent. I don't know how this thing could be "fixed" or just "adjusted" but I really think that players at Master 8 level should be way more smart making a ITST double match way more realistic.

Hello,

you can post a .dmo telling each score to check and what to look for on each score, and I'll have a look..!

thank you, i'll check it tonight and send it to you. I know that players are not supposed to be perfect and sometimes making some mistakes and errors make the whole thing more realistic, but some mistakes are way too enormous :D

I took only some points of the 3rd set, even though I'm sure that a lot of dumb mistakes have been taken place in the first two as well (I'm Baghdatis in team with Llodra)

On 0-1, 30-30: This is the kind of shot that CPU should always hit in a situation like that (assuming that sometimes he wants to go for the counter or he just makes the wrong decision as a human being, that should happen like 1 time of out 10 and not 9 out of 10 lol)
On 0-1, 40-40: This is the way CPU plays the same exact shot than before 9 times out of 10. Why should a player do like that? Go for the empty court and close the point, no? (You can see the same play at 3-2, 30-0 and 4-5, first point).
On 4-4, first point: There is a very fast rally at the net. Way too fast, thats not realistic but this has been discussed sometime before so it is just a thing I wanted to remind, not related to the main "problem" of this post.
On 5-5, 30-15: What is the point of hitting a shot like that? He could have gone for the crosscourt or the lob but decides, I don't know why, to aim at the body of the opponent with a very slow shot which is easily controlled by the opponent who wins the point at the very next shot (guess how? Unforced by my player).
On 5-6, 15-0: That is a very frustrating thing that happens a lot of time, even on big points. I am playing a cross-court rally against my opponent (human player) and suddenly my CPU partner comes in play but instead of playing on the other CPU player he plays on the human player which, of course, can play a very easy shot down the line in the open court. That shot is a winner almost every time and is totally non-sense according to me.
On 5-6, 2nd deuce: How is it possible to miss a volley like that I will never know, especially if you think that he's supposed to be Master 8 diffcult.

I know that players are not meant to be perfect and they have to miss some shot quite sometime, otherwise the game would be too hard and not realistic at all, but the AI of CPU player in doubles matches is too defective according to me. Wrong decisions in the wrong times, a lot of big mistakes on key points, no idea of how a double matches should be played. I don't even know if there could ever be a solution to "improve" the AI of CPU on doubles matches but right now it really doesn't have any idea of how a double match should be played

Ditto, it is terrible at the moment and I'm referring to Incredible 10 CPUs

Doubles always had some buggy things and poor CPU decisions due to AI, but now it is pretty pointless and worse than ever before.

For example, let's say 70% was skills in 2009-2012 and 30% random garbage. Now it's 30% skills and 70% random garbage.
The TE's all-round and doubles GOAT
73 titles (7 S + 66 D) + Davis Cup + Team Cup
11 Grand Slam titles in doubles (out of 12 played)
Best singles ranking #3
Best doubles ranking #1
Olympics 2012 - singles bronze, doubles gold

campa100anni,
I looked all points you reported.
1st of all, only 5 stupid things in a set, it's not too bad... :P But maybe you didn't report all stupid points of the set..?

On 0-1, 30-30 / On 0-1, 40-40: actually, the CPU doesn't see 2 opponents ; he still plays singles, and depending of where he's aiming and the situation, he picks one of the 2 opponents, and still use Singles decision process to decide where to aim ; that's why he can only hit in the hole if he's lucky ; ie: the best shot against the opponent on baseline will often end in the racket of the opponent at the net, not in the hole between them 2 . I'll see if I can easily make him see the hole or not.

On 4-4, first point: yup, I know these ones... I don't like them too much, but I don't think I'll change them... They will go away in TE4 though, where the precision & ball physics system will get a complete re-haul to prevent these kinds of unrealistic situations (and some other ones as well)

On 5-5, 30-15: hum, I'm not sure to understand what is the problem ; is it the backhand the upper-right CPU does while standing on the service line ? It's not a slow shot, it's a normal speed shot, and it's not too stupid to do that, as the answer of the opponent is a poor volley ; the real mistake is on his next shot : the volley is badly produced and slightly crossed to the right where it should have gone to the left to avoid the volleyer ; it's not really unrealistic though as itself, but it depends of the frequency of the mistake...

On 5-6, 15-0: I understand what you're talking about, but I don't see it in that point ; maybe you noted down the wrong score ? I can see your human opponent doing some stupid stuff though, there... :P

On 5-6, 2nd deuce: hum, on this one, I'm not sure it's such an easy volley : look the CPU, he's still moving a lot during the volley, so it's hard to center the ball & be successful. I'll look the calculations in detail, though, to check if it needs some tunings or not.

If you have time, note down the stupid stuff in 1st set as well, I'll look these ones as well..!

thank you for your very quick reply ;)
About the 5-6, 15-0 point my player (Baghdatis) eventually saved the ball but most of the times it ends up with a winner but human opponent. Anyway it's great to hear that you are trying to improve the CPU AI for doubles matches and even greater to hear that in TE4 a lot of things will be rebuilt like physics and attitudes. I'll try to post some point of the other two sets as well, thanks again ;)
