TE2009 : Beta 1

General discussions about the 3rd edition of Tennis Elbow

Question, how many points are we allotted to use for our player to be able to play on fair mode?

Manutoo,

This is very nice. I am enjoying playing TE2009 now, to the point that I am not noticing the umpire and things like that so much :D . It is surprising how well TE2009 plays on my slow computer with such basic hardware and Windows 98 SE -- wow. I just downloaded the beta yesterday or today, so I haven't played it very much yet.
One thing that I have noticed, and this is just an observation, is that the strike preparation movements seem a little truncated to me. To me, it looks like there is not much of a pivot with the body on the take back of the racquet in preparation, and it seems that basically the hitting arm takes the racquet back, although there is some upper and much less lower body turning. Also, the player seems to not really be looking at the ball upon the strike, but rather to be turned a lot toward the net. I am by far no tennis expert, so the feedback of others may be more beneficial here as I may be totally off on what I think is correct. All in all, though, this is nice. The player's faces (especially the male players) are a little, well, scary looking when zoomed-in, but that may have been when my detail level was too low. I will try again with higher detail. The female player always looks good.

Thanks! :lol:

I was wrong about the visual aspect at contact. I just played again, and the player does look toward the contact point upon impact. Sorry about that. :wink:

Well, I may have been entirely wrong. I just played some more, and there is a good bit of lower body pivot. Hmmm, I don't know what I was referring to. Maybe it is just that the movement seemed truncated in the sense that I am not seeing all of the movements to get to the hitting position. The hitting position seems correct, but it just seems visually arrived at too fast, with the take back and such a little truncated I guess. I'm interested to hear what others think. This may be one of those aspects of the game that can't be changed right now due to other concerns. I will try to focus my comments more and the game play, maybe.
:P

@Everybody :
Version Updated :
www.managames.com/download.php?TennisElbow2009_fb1b.exe [ same link that in 1st post ]

Improvements:
- players' weight
- Serve Speed Stats
- Option to show the rally strikes speed (need to activate the advanced options to see it)
- accelerated volleys fixed when having high skill % (people, u were right to complain about this ;) )

@Brad1981 :
the CPU power baseliner should hit shot with about same strength than the defender, and come to net quite less often than the puncher... Isn't it the case ..?

@S.Williamz :
Read a bit after here : https://www.managames.com/tennis/doc/Ten ... tml#skills
It's not up to date, but it's already 80% accurate.

@milos :
If a reboot didn't fix your display problem, could u tell me what is ur video card, and try to update to the latest video drivers for it ?

@ahmedcoolio :
Damn, it looks like the 3D camera rotated, but it shouldn't be able to do that... :?

@Tscott415 :
avr of 80% => 780 points left
avr of 60% => 1420 points left

@CC :
>> the strike preparation movements seem a little truncated to me.

If for a reason or another the player doesn't have the time to do the strike preparation, the start will be truncated. It can happen at the net mostly.

I didn't time exactly the strike preparation, but pro players do it quite quickly as well.
The "prepare as early as possible" advice apply only to beginners & lowly skilled club players...

Version updated again coz I forgot to change the Build number. (it's needed for the online play, as the volley has been tuned)
I also smoothed the zoom speed before & after the service, so it'll be easier on the eyes... :)

Thanks manutoo, I knew about those, and it is mostly TE2006 mechanics isn't it? I'm interested in TE 2009 ones, that aren't listed there. (stamina, counter, net presence, power baseliner etc.):D

Regarding the playing styles...power level of power baseliner is good, but I feel it comes to the net too often. I think it should be like defender, except more powerful (which it is). I always felt puncher came to the net too much, even in TE 2006, but since you added the power baseliner, I just feel that he should stick to the baseline 90% of the time. Right now it feels like he stays at the baseline about 70-75% of the time.

There seems to be some bug or something with the serve...I find it completely impossible to return a serve that's right in the wide corner to the deuce court when server is right-handed, or ad court when server is left-handed. I have tried everything, even if I am almost standing there waiting the ball to that spot I can't return it.
I have the camera on scrolling and full zoom out...if that has anything to do with the problem.

Manutoo,

That makes sense. I am a beginner real tennis player, so I was only judging by what I have learned. Thanks for that explanation about the preparation.
One little thing, that you probably can't do anything about and probably shouldn't bother with, is that I don't hear the sound of someone joining my game in Windows 98 unless the TE2006 or TE2008 is active; whereas, under XP, I always here the sound, no matter what window or program is active.
Also, I have been having quite a few problems, on two computers (XP and 98) with the TE2009 game crashing or failing to connect. The screen will say "Connecting..." but just remain there, and then I will have to close the process, and often a window saying that tenniselbow is not responding appears. I need to test this more with the latest version, as this may be working better than it was. Now I always completely remove the program prior to reinstalling it (or a new version), but this hasn't helped much with this.
One thing that amazes me is that, even on my slow computer with Windows 98, I can host a game with TE2006 and host a game with TE2009 at the same time (different ports) and wait for someone to join. As if that were not enough, I can even open TE2009 twice, one for hosting a game and one for playing while I wait for someone to join the hosted game, with the two windows both visible on the screen at the same time. That is just too neat :!: :D :lol: :P
I am trying to do a two-step strike, where I take a little step into the strike as I hit the ball, and it seems to be working OK. Also, I am trying to hit running shots, and I think that I am getting more able to do this. I would like to be able to do this rather than to always strike the ball from a still position, as in real tennis I try to step into the strike for added power.

Thanks for the game and your hard work!

I THINK WE HAD THE VOLLEY RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

Postby solarisaint » 07 Oct 2008, 05:35

YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND NOT EVERYBODY GOES TO THE NET, PEOPLE LIKE TO PLAY THE BASELINE. VOLLEY IN REAL TENNIS IS HARD TO DROP A BALL WHEN A 80 MILE HOUR STRIKE IS HEADING FOR YOU. I THINK WE HAD IT RIGHT BEFORE WHEN THE VOLLEY WAS A LITTLE
HARDER. WE HAVE TO KEEP IT BALANCED FOR ALL PLAYING STYLES AND NOT CATER TO ONE STYLE :cry:

I'm usually not one to get involved but I will add...I have been playing Tennis Elbow for 2 and a half years. (Actually I remember playing it a bit 10 years ago when I was in high school and the game was in its DOS days). And I have been playing real tennis for 20 years. Manu has got it right with this latest correction. When playing this game, I want my player to play at a high level. Professionals do this on a constant basis. Vast majority of shots go in. So when I have everything set to 100%, I expect the majority to go in. This was not the case with volleys. It has gotten better with the latest update. (I still feel it is a bit too difficult, but I will not complain too much about this unless there is an overwhelming sense of this by other people). So, I for one am much more pleased.

THE VOLLEY BRAD

Postby solarisaint » 07 Oct 2008, 06:27

BRAD I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING AND I RESPECT YOUR OPINION. PEOPLE AND PLAYERS ARE ALLWAYS SHOUTING ABOUT GREAT BALL MECHANICS.
MY TAKE ON THIS AND IF IM WRONG I WILL APOLOGIES TO ALL. THIS MORINIG WHILE I WAS PLAYING AT THE NET IN THE GAME OF COURSE. I REALIZED HOW RIGHT HE HAD IT, BECAUSE IN REAL TENNIS WHEN YOU VOLLEY YOU SHIFT YOUR BODY TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT TO RELEASE THE WEIGHT OF YOUR BODY SO THE BALL WILL SO SLIGHTLY BOUNCE OFF THE RACKET AND IT SEEMED HE EMULATED THAT PERFECT. IM SORRY THATS JUST THE WAY I FEEL :cry:

Solarisaint, please take your caps lock off. I think I'm speaking for most people when I say it's hard on the eyes.
Record (since coming back from ban): 24-6
#19 (Too bad I got myself banned, otherwise I'd be #11, even without the tournaments I missed)
Winner: Banja Luka, Vienna
F: Paris
SF: Newport, Bucharest, Beijing, Tokyo, Basel
QF: Wimbledon, Indianapolis
