General discussions about the 3rd edition of Tennis Elbow

Postby Algo » 07 Sep 2008, 19:20

at least when it gets to the net is hard to pass him because it gets to almost everything, the only bad thing is that it shots slow and right to the centre(level 2 now)
sugg: i don't know if it's possible to add a zoom camera, like top spin 1 zoom camera(for example), also if it's possible to make the camera move on the replay like it does when you are playing

Test Play on TE 2008

Postby Tuohey » 07 Sep 2008, 19:45

Thanks for the tip & fix. The wider resolution is perfect and the mouse and player are cooperating with one another. With those changes, I finally won a set!

brad: you were right, i changed the style of the bot to power baseliner and at level 1 still hitting at 90-100 km/h...(now it's hitting just b1 or b2 shots) can you tune that manutoo?, if its power baseline it should hit at 120 or more dont you think?

@Everybody :
In the previous update, there was a bug that made the CPU hit the safe strike way too often... This is now fixed.
I also greatly raised the number of direct faults of the CPU. As its acceleration efficiency is higher than in TE2006, I hope it'll give a well balanced result (and more realistic)... :)

@R.Valenzuela :
To pass the CPU at the net, you have 2 choices :
1- be very good using the regular acceleration, the short strike, and the top spin strike & the defense lob
2- be just good using the short acceleration, and the attack lob

@Brad1981 :
I looked frame by frame one Federer run, and the player with 100% at speed & tonicity accelerates a bit more than him... :roll:

Am glad to see that was a bug :wink: I was worried there with that last update. Pace is very good now. Shots and trajectories are very good. Seems like everything in that area could be final. Nicely done. Slice is nicely improved.
Sorry to be a pest about the movement, it's just at the higher levels it is extremely difficult to get some shots. But the running speed has nothing to do with it; that is fine. It's just the shuffle (initial) speed/response (as I've said so many times lol :wink: )
I respect and understand that you have checked this with real-life data, but I suppose some things are different to translate to a video game from real life. I'm just saying (just my opinion of course), it would increase the playability of the game to do this change.
But if you can't, it would be appreciated if you could implement what I mentioned in my previous post (either 1 more arcade level with mtrun enacted by default, or just have a setting in tennis.ini to make it default).
I hate to use it, but it's increased sensitivity for shuffle and quick turn in direction makes it much more playable for me.
One other thing: why was the Nadal shot button changed? I thought the button scheme was just fine with B1 + up + down

Brad1981,
here the data I gathered (I didn't spend much time on it, as I just wanted to have a rough idea, not a very precise one).
The situation : Federer is running to the net, almost stop, and then run to the left to get a passing. I measured this run to the left. I can easily count the distance on left, coz it's the grass of Wimbledon, with lines.
He was running a bit in diagonal, so I balanced a bit the measures.
I got this :
0.2s => 0.5cm
0.4s => 1m
0.8s => 2.7m

And in real life, sometimes there are close shots that u just can't get coz they're too fast as well... ;)

I'll add a parameter in the .ini for the cheat code...

Fair enough. Maybe I'll get used to it after a while. Thanks for adding the additional parameter.
1 other thing, why was button scheme for Nadal shot changed? I thought it was fine and tough enough/just right the way it was.

Brad1981, oops I forgot to answer this one in my previous message..!
So I changed it coz even after had forced the center + up + down, (instead of doing only up + down), i was still doing it by accident...
But the down + up + down might be too complicated, and doesn't let much time for precision & left/right adjustement... :?
Maybe I'll change it to something else, but I'm not sure what is the best one ; ie: not too hard, but cannot do by mistake... Maybe b1+b2 followed by b1+down...

I thought the buttons were fine just the way they were :D
It was perfect. Actually, I had never hit it by accident, and if it was a problem, people would have complained. Any chance u could put it back??? :wink: 8-)

edit: computer is making too many errors. I have at level 2 and in tiebreak, computer made 7 unforced errors. I am playing 2nd tiebreak and in first 3 points, computer made 3 errors. I have cpu levels on everything set to 100.

1. I noticed something weird...on lvl2 opponent...when I hit a ball it appears like some dust...like in RL when ball hits on some really dry clay surface. But this here happens on the BG surface and at contact of a ball and racket .

2. CPU is too defensively orientated. But as I recall you said that he is Varied. Little more aggressiveness from CPU would be good.

3. Movement its pretty good...but when running backwards it also little bit weird...

all in all...that first thing that i saw really must be removed...but almost all other things are pretty good, and i like it

ps. switching sides while moving in the middle of the point is too slow...thats what I realized it now

ps2. first problem somehow dissapeared

Ok i played little more

First that dust thing appears after long rally...I don't know whats that supposed to be.

And that switching sides...its exactly what Williams was talking about...it takes too long for a player to start running toward ball

maybe because we got use to Elbow 2006...

The dust thingy after a long rally (with acceleration) is to signal that you have hit your last accelerated stroke.

PL1 movement #2

Postby btaylor » 09 Sep 2008, 22:28

It also seems that PL1 struggles to cover the volleys while the CPU glides quickly/easily to most balls in a reflex situation(even with mtrun, style=4, speed/tonicity/reflexes=100). With the speed of the passing shots at the higher levels PL1 should be able to jump more/stab/change direction as efficiently as the CPU. :wink:

Serving Problems

Postby btaylor » 10 Sep 2008, 09:34

Manutoo...I hate to be a pain, but I must say I'm a tad confused about your approach to the serve in tennis. :? For example, Andy Roddick served the fastest serve ever in tennis (155mph) in a Davis Cup tie vs Sweden and Jonas Bjorkman got the serve back in play, albeit a very WEAK reply which Roddick easily put away with his forehand. Roddick again served a 144mph bomb to Federer in last year's U.S. Open which Federer simply blocked with his backhand into play and won the point. MY point, however, is that the big servers (and we agree Roddick is the biggest) usually dominate/dictate the rest of the point. Moreso than not. I posted to you in TE2006 about the CPU returning 130+ serves for forceful returns or clean winners. Now in TE 2008 the SAME thing happens with 140+ serves (except for the occasional chip return that still lands harmlessly deep near the baseline) Unlike some other tennis games you seem to feel that the bigger the serve, the more defensive the server. I'm sorry, but THAT'S just not reality...I thought that one of the purposes of the TE series was to somewhat mimic real tennis. I mainly play against the computer, not so much against other players yet and I realize that some have and will abuse the use of the big serve, but can you help me here? :( Can we PLEASE see some weak returns from the CPU? I will not post again on this topic as it seems I have so many criticisms and I don't want to pluck your nerves, I just want to help! 8-)
