Test Version #1 + Preview #3

General discussions about the 3rd edition of Tennis Elbow

Postby S.Williamz » 19 Aug 2008, 19:54

Btw, I agree with Brad about the player movement...it often feels as if your players feet are stuck to the ground...in TE 2006 it felt more fluid and bouncy, thus more natural.(and more fun, now it's quite frustrating)
What I really would suggest is making moving in a small area a lot more sensitive, when the player is taking the split steps...Imo the run speed is fine, but I think the player should start running that way(sideways) a bit earlier.
That way it would remain balanced(I think), faster more sensitive split steps, but earlier break into running so that you can't split step half a court.
Another point is that its a shame we don't get to see the new running animation more often(I hardly ever see it during rallies, plus it's more natural if the player runs like that more often).

I really really really think this would work.

Also I noticed this thing...when using the left and right arrow keys, even after stopping pressing them the player moves a short distance left and right. The longer you have pressed the longer the extra distance. I noticed this was also in TE 2006...but now the problem is, because in TE 2008 you have to think about the position, it becomes rather frustrating when moving to balls near the lines to position yourself correctly...you move to the ball, stop pressing while in good position, and yet the player moves by itself further and thus messes up the positioning and hits an error...I know that with practice you might be able learn it better, but I was thinking it would be simply more fun and less annoying if the player almost fully stopped after you stop pressing the direction keys.

I haven't looked that closely at this, so maybe it is just a wrong interpretation on my part, but after the first game, it seems that in the simulated switching of sides, only the umpire and the chairs move to the opposite side. If so, could it be so that the crowds and everything else also moves around accordingly? Sorry to be picky :)

CC, it's coz both ends of the court look exactly same...

S.Williamz, I think I got it what was wrong with the player moment, coz it was more clear when playing at the net, and I already tuned it, u'll see the result with Test Version #2.

Inertia is really realistic and is one of the main difference of TE with all other tennis games, and there are many advantage to this... With practice, you should be able to anticipate it (exactly like on a real court u decelerate before have reached the correct position) and use it to get more time to prepare your strikes...

Manutoo,

I am referring more to the crowd. When you start a match in TE2008, there are two people standing at the far end from the server on the left side, one a lady dressed in light blue. There is a group of people near them in the stands wearing pinkish apparel. On the opposite side, same end, there is someone seating wearing a red shirt, and someone next to him with their arm on the partition. Well, so the two sides are different.
I think maybe that you are saying that each server always seems the same crowd, and always seems them so that two standers I mentioned are always on the server's left side, far end. Anyway, when the "switch sides" takes place, it seems that the crowd stays exactly the same, and that is what I meant. It would be a little more realistic if they kind of appeared differently as if the player had actually switched sides, as the umpire certainly does not move around in real tennis, does he?
But, maybe that is a detail that really is not important, and I would certainly rather have it like it is and have the gameplay get your attention rather than some silly crowd, so I understand if this is meaningless banter on my part.

CC, I got what u mean... Unfortunately, there's not much that could easily be done, so it'll stay that way for now... :?
And if it shocks too many people, I'll go back to TE2006 where the chair umpire was fixed... :P

I'm excitedly waiting for test version 2 updates!

My main issue with the current movement was that you aren't able to stop the player completely when you want to, for example in TE 2006 when you pressed a strike button the player stopped, this was realistic and fun.

S.Williamz, I was very wondering what u were talking about, coz in TE2006 there's also some inertia, so I launched both TE2006 & TE2008 and I noticed the difference : about 1m to stop in TE2006, and about 3m in TE2008..!
I checked and I forgot to handle a case in TE2008, so for next update, it'll be back to 1m to stop (from almost full speed) when starting to aim...

yup, it looks like I forgot to put a file in the package... :?

The Test Version #2 will come soon (maybe later today, or probably on sunday at worst), coz I'm going to change the "spirit" of the test : instead of waiting to have the almost final AI before releasing it, it'll have an in-progress AI and I'll add & modify it according to your comments... I hope it'll lead faster to a better final result... :P
