The new adjustable volley has been very helpful to me, and I'm only now routinely getting to the net with the baseliners I usually play with. I've found that while it's now worth the risk to come forward, the volley skills at the net are so strong now that my player makes many volleys he shouldn't.
What I think might really help make volleying a bit easier but not too easy is to speed up players' vertical movement. I find that it seems to take an unnaturally long time to reach the net even with incredibly fast players like Nadal and Ferrer (and this is after rushing the net from just inside the baseline; I'm not making my approach from an inappropriate position). With the new adjustable volley setting, I'm still slow and only just reach the net to make an awkward (but now make-able) volley, but the following volleys are all unrealistically strong. I think it would be more realistic to have the speed (and skill) to put away a sitter but not enough skill to camp out at the net once you're there like a real volley master.
