Vertical speed [Issue reaching the Net fast enough]

Postby wjdygert » 14 Oct 2013, 22:30

The new adjustable volley has been very helpful to me, and I'm only now routinely getting to the net with the baseliners I usually play with. I've found that while it's now worth the risk to come forward, the volley skills at the net are so strong now that my player makes many volleys he shouldn't.

What I think might really help make volleying a bit easier but not too easy is to speed up players' vertical movement. I find that it seems to take an unnaturally long time to reach the net even with incredibly fast players like Nadal and Ferrer (and this is after rushing the net from just inside the baseline; I'm not making my approach from an inappropriate position). With the new adjustable volley setting, I'm still slow and only just reach the net to make an awkward (but now make-able) volley, but the following volleys are all unrealistically strong. I think it would be more realistic to have the speed (and skill) to put away a sitter but not enough skill to camp out at the net once you're there like a real volley master.

Hello,

this is actually pretty realistic ; nowadays with the current speed of play it's hard for the players to reach the net in good conditions in the real life ATP Tour.
In TE it's still slightly easier though, but you have to be sure to do an acceleration strike that will give you a slow return from your opponent, or use a slow approach (ie: a long sliced ball) to give you time to get close enough of the net for your 1st volley.
In all cases, be sure to release your strike button & start to run forward as soon as you strike the ball, to not lose even 1/10th of second.

I agree with manutoo. The volley game is quite realistic... as far as current period is concerned ! Nowadays, the players can't even reach the net to strike a volley so it's the same in TE. But 20 years ago, it was quite different, many players were volleyers. But sure it's hard to do the same in TE despite of previous nice update.

First, let me say that I am aware that coming to the net is more difficult than it used to be in the game.

I've taken your advice and been more careful about only coming forward only after certain shots and moving immediately after striking the ball, and that has helped.

I do still feel like a tank going forward compared to my side-to-side movement (and going backwards  ) and I'd still like it to be easier to do 'cleanup' reaction volleys with players like Nadal and Ferrer, but it obviously must just be me if no else has problems with this.

Thanks for the response. :thumbright:
